My wife and I were notified that our long awaited international adoption had come through and we needed to be in Russia within a week. Being near the holiday, fares were outrageous. We shopped on CheapTickets and found the least expensive fare and made the purchase. Pleased with the price and itinerary, we awaited our tickets that were to be sent by overnight delivery. One ticket arrived but not the other.

Calls to the CheapTicket customer service center reached foreign speaking, incompetent people who couldn't or wouldn't help. After 3 desperate calls, we received information that the lost ticket had been sent by UPS. UPS informed us that the only the sender, CheapTickets, could file a lost shipment report. Nobody at CheapTickets was willing to help. They would keep us on hold for over an hour each time we called to talk to a supervisor. Many of those calls were eventually disconnected by CheapTickets.

Finally, two days before we were to leave, we reached somebody at CheapTickets who was willing to file a lost ticket report. They didn't advise us that this action cancelled our reservation. They were unwilling to replace the ticket.

The day before we were to leave, a mutilated ticket arrived from UPS with an apology that it had been stuck in a machine.

To make a long story short, upon arrival at the airport with the mutilated ticket, we learning that CheapTickets cancelled our lost ticket reservation! Only after significant tears and pleading to a manager at United Airlines did they take action and reinstate the ticket.

This is a warning to anybody who would consider saving money by booking travel with CheapTickets.com: Buyer Beware. This outfit is only out to make a quick buck on the Internet and do not stand by the sale. Our situation could have ended with a more dire result had it not been for a sympathetic United Airlines manager. Next time, we will buy through a legitimate travel agent or directly from the airline. CheapTickets sends American jobs to a black hole in Asia and with it goes any semblance of customer service. Avoid them!

And as a postscript, you might be interested to know that CheapTickets is owned by Cendant who also own Orbitz, Avis and Budget. Draw your own conclusions.
