To describe my concern, I have copy/pasted the text of an email I sent to CenturyLink's General Counsel, giving them an opportunity to address my gripe. I sent the message 8/26/2015 and as of today have had no reply so I'm posting here and other sites to alert possible targets of this apparently fraudulent "advertising".

As you are General Counsel for CenturyLink I would like to draw your attention to a mailing I received this week. The mailing, in the form of a postcard, was addressed specifically to me and had a heading, “IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR CENTURYLINK ACCOUNT”. It then starts, “Dear CenturyLink Customer, You are receiving this notification because you have files in the CenturyLink Personal Digital Vault…”

It then goes on to tell me that if I don’t take action, on 10/30/2015 my files will be permanently deleted. It then goes on to “sell” the idea of signing up for CenturyLink @Ease and provides a web address where I can sign up. Centurylink.com/home/ease/nobu

The fact is, I don’t now and never did have files save to the CenturyLink Personal Digital Vault. On calling the support number to ask about this mailing, there was some confusion but acknowledgement that this went to a large group of customers, not just those that were known to have files saved to the Personal Digital Vault. I happen to be a savvy computer user and was the CIO for one of the top Wall Street law firms for sixteen years so, I was not falling for the mailing. I am contacting you because I am concerned for your customers who are not computer savvy and who might sign up for this service not realizing that they, like me, have no files that are going to be “permanently deleted”. I assume that CenturyLink’s intention was not to scare people into signing up for the @Ease service but this mailing does smack of fraud. This could have been solved simply by different wording, “If you have are a user of our Personal Digital Vault and have saved files to our system, please be aware that…”

This is not however the wording so I would suggest you do something to notify your customers of the “truth” of the situation. A second mailing would work but would take time so, my suggestion would be to place a prominent, clear message on the website to which they are being pointed, notifying customers of the erroneous notification.

Your thoughts and intended actions would be greatly appreciated.

Note: I did notify your support line on Monday but am not confident that they really understand the serious nature of this concern.

Regards, Gerald.
