Hi, and thanks to everyone at BadBusinessBureau.com who tried to help with this, and the nice people who posted suggestions here on Rip-off Report. Well, I tried it all, and after filing a fraud report with CaptialOne, the charges were reversed and I was informed that I would be refunded what was left in 90 days. Three months later, I got a new bill with several HUNDRED dollars of compounded charges and interest. CapitalOne (one of their phone jockeys at least) said that they never received the fraud report, and I would have to pay. I requested another form to fill out but never received one. Now I'm getting letters from two different collections agencies trying to collect for CapitalOne, NCO Financial Systems and Collectcorp Corporation, for a total of (drum roll please) $1496.60. I don't know what magazines I'm supposed to have subscribed to, but for that kind of money I hope they were printed on gold! I have finally reached the end of being reasonable and trying to work with people who are unreasonable and such obvious scam artists. I've contacted several law firms which specialize in class-action lawsuits and have found one to take the case, and I'm collecting information from others who have been burned by CapitalOne and their various magazine subscription companies. If you fall into that category don't let them get you down, contact me and I'll pass your info onto the legal eagles. I am really sorry the situation had to come to this stage, but if a big public class-action lawsuit and lots of bad publicity about a greedy corporation is the only way to get it resolved, then I am more than happy to take it on. This should make some good copy for the media, they're still hot from Enron and Worldcom et al, so another shady big business story will help to bring even more victims into the fold. We will win.

Changing the card number is not going to help. You cannot claim the charges are fraud if you at anytime gave them the credit card number. The only way to get it resolved is to dispute the charges. The defenition of the word "unauthorized" means you NEVER EVER gave them the credit card number. If you are having trouble getting the companies to stop, then call Capital One and request to speak with the Merchant Resolutions department. At least if the charges are disputed, they will more than likely stop billing the credit card. The only other problem is that they may start billing you by mail. Try this, it will help :>)

After reading your comments, I was disappointed that this matter hasn't been resolved. I currently work for Capital One. I am a phone associate that helps our cardholders daily with charge disputes, etc. I'd like to first comment that we are not partners with MOS. The magazine company we work with is NMS. NMS bills 1X per year and has great discounted rates. The most common way we advertise magazines is through our statement inserts. I am familiar with what MOS is, but only due to calls I have personally taken. In my opinion they are a scam. They offer their magazines through telemarketing. From what I understand their rates are monthly for numerous years. If when calling them to cancel they do not agree, you can call Capital One to have your credit card number changed & the charges reported as fraud. As for Shopper's Advantage, we are not associated with them either. The most common way they offer their program is when a consumer places an order by phone for a product most commondly advertised on TV. The order taker will ask if you want a 30 day trial membership. If you do not cancel within the 30 days, the credit card number used to buy the advertised product is billed 1X per year. I personally believe that many consumers are signed up even if they say no. In both cases, there is a phone number listed beside the charges on your Capital One statement. If you call their direct number, you can inquire as to how you were signed up and you can also cancel and request a refund. Again, if they do not agree, you can call Capital One to have a lost/stolen report done and those charges will be reported as fraud and a new credit card number will be issued to replace your existing credit card account. We do work with numerous companies to offer other services to our customers...through statement inserts, telemarketing, direct mailings and by calling customer service. Any company we work directly with, we can cancel for you. If you'd like to not be solicited for other programs, you can call us and "opt out". We have sent two separate mailings to every customers in the past 1 1/2 years regarding the "opt out" option. Lastly I like you to know something about ALL credit card companies. We do not have any control over what is charged to our cardholders' accounts other than our own charges (past due fee, overlimit fee, annual membership fee, monthly membership fee, cash advance fee, returned check fee & finance charges) which are systematically charged to an account. If there is a problem, please bring it to our attention in a calm, rational manner so that we can help you. We are here to lend you money, not rip you off.
