Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
We paid $20.00 CASH for a gift card which is now deemed as no longer any good according to your stores and web site?  Does this mean my son can't get the $20.00 from the gift card and that we are out the $20.00?
This means your business took our $20.00 and gave nothing but a worthless piece of plastic in return
I no longer have a job due to Corporate Outsourcing so $20.00 is a lot to me.
THAT IS SOOOO WRONG....

Call their corporate executive offices, explain the situation and ask would they please issue you a replacement card or voucher. Normal customer service is useless for this. Always go to the top. In the interest of good relations I'm betting they'd accommodate you.

Contact the bankruptcy administrator and get put on the creditor list.

While that sounds like a good idea in reality it will do nothing.

When a company declares bankruptcy the Trustee will sell off it's assets and use that money to pay off the creditors.  The amount available to pay off the creditors it not going to be enough to pay the debts.  If there was there would be no reason for the company to declare Bankruptcy in the first place.

So the trustee makes certain decisions as to who gets paid and how much they get paid.  They don't say "Oh we have this $20 debt let's just pay that one off".  There are certain priorities as to who gets paid first.  Unfortunately a customer with a $20 gift card is going to be at the bottom of this very long list.  So if on the outside chance(we are talking being struck by lightning twice odds) they would get anything, it would be a fraction of the cards "value".

Of course in this case this is probably a mute point anyway.  It appears that the sale was already approved, and the funds dispersed.  So it would be too late even if it was practical.

They declared bankruptcy, wiping out their debts, including gift cards. Contact the bankruptcy administrator and get put on the creditor list.

Gift Cards

Does this mean my son can't get the $20.00 from the gift card and that we are out the $20.00?
- The short answer is Yes.  Sorry.

Blockbuster went Bankrupt in 2010, in April 2011 they no longer accepted any outstanding gift cards.  So your son probably had this card for a while.  Hopefully you and your son have learned a fairly inexpensive lesson.  A Gift Card is only as good as long as the store that you buy it from is around.  So use any card you get as soon as you can and don't let it lay around.  Because the reality is you don't know if that company will be around tomorrow.
