Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
Me and my husband were looking to switch from Sprint to AT&T and decided that Best Buy had some nice phones to choose from. We talked to the first guy (don't know his name) who told us all of the phone we were looking at (including a nice Blackberry) all cost $15 extra a month for the data plan (after we pressed him for the data, they weren't very forthcoming at first about the extra charges). We thought, ok, that sounds good so me and my husband walked around a bit thinking over if we should go with AT&T and maybe get the data plan added on as well. We decided to go ahead and do it and came back and asked about getting the Blackberry since i've heard nice things about them.

Then the guy tells me that the data charge for that one is $30/month, say what? He had just told us they were all $15/month now the blackberry is $30/month for data?? I asked him which phones had the $15/month plan and he roamed his hands over *all* of the surrounding phones and said "all of these except the Blackberry".. Ok, we started getting a bit frustrated by this point but said "Ya, we'll take the Blackjack instead x 2". So we were then handed off to some other guy named CHRIS who we talked to about the phones and asked about all the various charges. He started the activation process and came back and asked if we wanted the $30/month data plan... um, NO, that would be $15/month there you LIARS.

Turns out that *all* those phones he said were $15/month were actually $30/month plans.. nothing but dirty liars! So I complained and was about to walk out, he said he's call his AT&T rep and see if he can get us a month of the data service free for our inconvenience of him LYING to us.

He comes back around 5 minutes later and said that he can't give us any free months, but if we sign up for the $30/month data services on each of the two phones that they would waive the activation fee..... wait WHAT activation fee? Oh great, now he's pulling ADDITIONAL fees out of his arse that he *never bothered to tell us*!! The activation fee for switching from Spring to AT&T is pretty substantial too, it's around $36 for the first phone and $27 for the 2nd phone. Nice of him to only reveal this after we caught him LYING to us about the data add on fee.

So after properly scolding him for his ridculousness and making sure our current phones were not going to be switched over, I complained to the store manager who didn't seem to have sink into his brain that this guy was OUTRIGHT LYING TO CUSTOMERS. He seemed more concerned about explaining how phone plans work and said he'd talk to the mobile team manager and tell them they need to understand what they are selling better, which they SHOULD know what the are selling, they sell this stuff everyday, how can they be this ignorant.. unless they were doing it on purpose!

Anyways, I recommend to stay FAR FAR away from the Brookfield Best Buy store for *anything* cell phone related!

Being a Best Buy Mobile employee, I can understand customers get confused about data plans. There are three phones on (soon to be four, when we get the iphone) ATT that are in need of a special data package ($35 a month per phone) -- the Palm, Blackberry's, and the BlackJack 2. They are not required, but I highly recommend them if you get any of the phones listed. The other phones DO have medianet unlimited for $15 (but medianet will not work on the listed phones)...they also have medianetmax unlimited for $35 a month (which includes, as listed on the AT&T wireless website, unlimited high-quality video with CV, unlimited mobile web with MEdia Net and unlimited access to email, games, ringtones and music as well as unlimited messaging - text, picture, video and IM with anyone in the U.S.). And sadly, activation fees are with all carriers (all carriers, excluding Verizon also have an upgrade fee for when you purchase a new phone.) This is nothing we can control, it is a carrier fee that will show up on your bill.) I really don't see why he would lie to you, I just see it as a misunderstanding. He gains nothing by lying to you, he is non-commissioned. Activation fees have nothing to do with what carrier you are previously on. They are the same when you switch to AT&T whether you come from Verizon, Tmobile, Sprint, etc. So, again, I apologize on behalf of Best Buy Mobile, for the misinformation you received.

Yes, I agree that it is the responsibility of the employee to properly explain the phone plans to you. If I was told by an employee with confidence that something was half of the listed cost and later on not guaranteed such price, I would immediately demand to speak with a supervisor or member of management. However, I cannot honestly believe that you've had a cell phone before and not been aware that there is an activation fee. That is the way of the cell phone world, and one will exist regardless of which retailer you go to. I'd say he was doing you a nice favor by waiving the activation fee, considering he had fouled up by misquoting the data plan. Also, for future reference: When speaking to management regarding phones, make sure you are speaking to the manager of the Best Buy Mobile department. The general management will not be able to easily resolve your issue since they are considerably less knowledgeable about phone service.
