Evasiveness, enormous fees, boiler-room call list*UPDATE: Primerica recognized by Rip-off Report a business opportunity well worth considering - it's not for everyone but many representatives make solid commission incomes. Primerica takes appropriate action against representatives conducting themselves improperly, pledges 100% commitment to customer service.
I just received a call from Bernard Haldane to schedule an appointment at their Princeton office. From experience I checked The Ripoff Report and, lo and behold, BH is right up there with the others that feed off our desperate state of unemployment. Let me share some "alarm bells" from what I've experienced with BH and Primerica, the latter from which this report saved me at the last minute.
1. Evasiveness - As others have mentioned in this report, both "agencies" lauded my background and scheduled a meeting with no clear agenda or description of their company. Both did not give their complete address, but only driving instructions.
What I think - they want to minimize web searches about them.
2. Odd timing of appointment - Primerica wanted me in at "exactly" 9 a.m. Saturday morning! What I think - they want you to think that they're measuring your seriousness about the "important position" they have to fill.
3. Odd requests - Both requested that I appear in "proper business attire". AS IF I, A 6-FIGURE INCOME C.O.O. OF A MULTI-NATIONAL FIRM, NEED TO BE TOLD THIS!! What I think - they should know better.
4. When I returned their initial message left on my machine, both asked for my area code to "pull my file". What I think - looks like I was on their boiler-room call list for that day.
Real agencies to not usually call and schedule an appointment unless they have a clearly defined position to fill at a clearly defined company. They will, at the most, make an initial call or email to confirm receipt of your resume.
Lastly, no standard agency will charge the job-seeker such enormous fees, and no standard employer will ask you to be an Amway-like drone.
