Berger & Company -United Kingdom Telesales Rip-off from Scotland

May I congratulate you on an excellent and much needed web site!
I am England, where we have a long history of rip-offs and bad business practices, but we have much in common otherwise. I would like to relate to you a situation which I am currently in, which all started with a telesales call. NB. The law in Scotland is different in many respects to the law in England, I am about to find out the hard way.
A couple of months ago, I received a telesales call at work, asking if I would be interested in reading an evaluation copy of a report on the topic of Quality Assurance, and, since I am the Quality Assurance Manager for the company, I said yes, and one was posted to me.
Being very busy, I didn't have chance to read it right away, and
eventually only read a few pages, and returned it by post.
The company is called Berger & Company, 8b St Vincent Street, Edinburgh EH3 6SH Scotland.
I then received an invoice for 395, luckily, it came to me for
authorisation first. I wrote a letter in response to Berger's invoice, stating that, since I did not want to keep the report, and have returned it, I do not owe them any money.
I received another letter stating that I have entered into a contract with Berger (by virtue of the telesales call) and that unless I pay the invoice, legal proceedings will be implemented.
I have not been ripped-off yet! I haven't actually paid any money or signed any contract, but I can imagine many people seeing this type of intimidating correspondence and paying the money.
This practice must be stopped.
