Bargain Network part of Santa Barbara 'boiler room' history

While it is true that Bargain Network is extremely careful to avoid running afoul of FTC laws, the founders of this company (previously called Century Direct) have a long history of scamming consumers. The principles of Bargain were each fined several years ago by the FTC and told to not take credit card numbers by telephone, fax or e-mail ever again. Yet they continued to operate and went on to create Bargain Network, the same old scam recast as a 'dot com'. Here are the people charged in 1998 by the FTC: Christian Hunter, Thomas Adams (son of a Santa Barbara judge!), Antoine Bourdeaux, Sven Klein, and Lisa Sultan. Several of these folks later went on to sell the company for $27 million to Vertrue Inc., of Stamford, Conn., another company with numerous complaints against it by consumers. For more on Century Direct/Bargain Network go to www.ftc.gov and enter 'Century Direct' in the search field. Incidentally, Santa Barbara has at least a 25 year history of in-bound telemarkeing scams with at times a dozen or more companies operating, netting their owners thousands of dollars daily by cheating consumers with fraudulent scams such as: government auctions (Century Direct's specialty), bartender courses, Post Office and Park Ranger jobs, secret shopper programs, etc.

I just got a charge to my debit card in the amount of 39.95, when my trial hasnt ended yet. It was definitely upsetting that I was charged this amount, as nowhere in the site does it state the membership fee per month or week, leading me to believe that they can charge you whatever they want. I didnt find the membership fee in ther help section, FAQ, or Terms and Conditions. I did contact Randall S in the above phone number and I was told that he would take care of the charge and that he would cancel the acount fo me, so compared to some other companies I had to deal with before (unauthorized charges w. no one to talk to or deal with) I would say that they are at least trying to allevate issues with costumers. I am quite happy with the level of service i got in regards to the unauthorized charges. I had friends who had called in to cancel and although they were offered a special "deal" of 12.95 or something for whole year, they didnt pressure you or try to make it difficult to cancel. In comparison when i had to cancel my efax trial through online chat, it was very hard to deal with them as they kept writing off scripted blurbs to make you stay. It took me anywhere from 15-20 mins while they kept typing and typing and i had to say no thanks four or five times. im just saying this because what i do first when I get ripped off is to try to get in contact w. the company and do all i can to correct the situation. Then what i do is to either file a compaint with Better Business Bureau, State's Atorney General's office or FTC. some reports here sound unprofessional and just seem to focus on bashing the company or bad mouthing them. Plus lack of information on what the person(s) did to correct the problem leads me to believe that they actually didnt make efforts to talk to the company first before lashing on them here. Please dont be offended if you actually did and they gave you a run around and the problem wasnt resolved. I too, would file a complaint (BBB, FTC whatever i can find )if the company refused to work with me on issues like this. I think if you dealt with them in a nice courteous matter they would be willing to work with you. of course there are plenty of companies which "nice" doesnt work, and thats why they have BBB, FTC and etc. In my experience, I think bargain.com is willing to work with you and to reverse charges if necessary. They can improve in making their membership fees transparent (i found their FAQ lacking in information, and there is no excuse for not having monthly or weekly membership fee info on there) and they can improve the site in terms of T&C. Also i found that the automatic chat window that pops up after you sign up is very annoying (apprently it seems like some automatic script and i thought it was a spyware). regardless, my charges havent been reversed and posted yet so i will update on what's to come, but just thought i should share this info with everyone else so that they can find my info useful before getting too upset and filing a report w. this company.
