We rented a Jeep for a week on Oahu. I returned the vehicle with a full tank, undamaged, and in what I thought was acceptable condition. There was definitely nothing out of the ordinary. I have rented my share of cars throughout my life and I did not see anything out of the ordinary.

The gentleman processing the return walked around the vehicle checking for damage, checked the fuel level, checked the odometer, checked the interior, opening every door, tailgate, glovebox, etc, checking to make sure we did not leave any personal belongings.

He then said. "OK. You're good to go!" He handed me the receipt and we headed to the terminal. I was not asked to sign any incident report and was not told anything that would lead me to believe there was a problem of any kind.

Upon return from our trip to Oahu in November 2012, I was charged an additional $150 on my credit card. I then received a letter in the mail stating they charged this $150 for "Excessive Trash in the Interior of the car".

I called the 800 number and they refused to refund the fee. They sent me pictures of the car with what looked like a car that had been driven for a week. Yes. It needed vacuuming. But what I saw was definitely not excessive trash.

I called back and tried to reason with them, telling the manager on the phone that I thought this was a scam.

I would say I am a medium renter... renting 10 cars a year, totaling about $1,500 a year. $600 of that was spent with AVIS last year.

The mistake I made here was renting through Priceline. However, I did agree to upgrade to the Jeep when I was there for another $150, and also agreed to upgrade to the comprehensive coverage for $27 a day (another $145). See the pattern here?

So my Priceline deal, after the upgrade, after the insurance, after the Excessive Trash Fee turned out to be far higher than if I had booked directly through Hertz and paid full retail for the rental.

I want my $150 back. I feel like I have been scammed and punished because I booked through Priceline.

I can tell you right now, AVIS has lost my business forever.

- Yep...you don't have much sales resistance and love to agree to upgrades.  It was 100% your choice to either take the car class you reserved or upgrade, as well as to accept or decline their additional insurance.

- When you booked the car you booked a particular class.  Had you upgraded and opted for the additional insurance with any other company you would have also have been charged more as well.  So for 2 of those "fees" that was YOUR choice and trying to compare the total price you paid with Avis with the "full retail" price of the RENTAL with Hertz is like comparing apples and oranges.

Now, as for the excessive trash fee, it sounds like you know it wasn't returned totally clean.  So how about posting a copy of the pictures they sent you.
