I am utterly disappointed in my experience with avis car rental. I rented a car with them through priceline and got what I thought was a great deal. When I got to the counter the young lady went over some of the rental details with me and the return date was off. They had me down for an extra day, I double checked my priceline email and the email was correct but somehow they had an extra day. The young lady said it was no big deal and I could return the car a day early and they wouldn't charge me. I thought that was nice. She began to start trying to upsell me on some bigger model cars, I declined about three different tries by her to upsell me. It's annoying, but I get it as a business to try and upsell. Next we covered insurance and this is where it all went wrong... she asked if I would like full coverage on the car, I said "no" and she began to say that Florida requires limited liability, but I could use my normal insurance. My insurance covers that so I said I will just use my insurance. She had me write down my insurance carrier and then a signature area came up on a computer screen and she asked for my signature. I asked what the signature was for and she said "you are signing to decline full coverage" and yes I was declining coverage so I signed it. Never once did she mention a different kind of insurance. Then a I went through some other stuff like costs and the total cost seemed almost correct, just a little higher and I thought it might just be local tax, it wasn't a huge difference. She printed out a form and made a line and said to "initial here stating that you are declining full coverage" so, me being in kind of a hurry trying to make it to meet family for dinner, I initialled the paper.

The car was great, it was a Chevy spark, the car could fit anywhere and was great on gas mileage. When I returned the car I got a bill for an extra $188. And I asked the guy checking it on why I had that, he said it was because on the insurance. I told him I declined insurance when I got the car, he stated I should go inside and they will "take care of it". I went inside and spoke with the gentleman behind the counter. I told him I declined the insurance and that I wanted it refunded, he said they don't do that but I could speak with a manager. She seemed uninterested to hear my story and just said "i'll split the cost with you." I told her that wasn't good enough, I'm didn't want to pay for something I declined, and they said because I put my initials that's means I understood I was getting insurance. I proceeded to tell her that the first lady I talked to when getting the car said I was signing to decline insurance, not to get it. She didn't care that I was lied to and again offered to split it down the middle. I took her offer because I had a plane to catch. But that was absolutely horrible customer service.  They wanted to charge me more for insurance than the actual car rental. I understand upselling people, but don't try and screw someone over to make your numbers or try and get your bonus. That's pathetic! Make things right avis! So basically I declined the highest tier insurance, was never told about the middle tier insurance and thought I was using my own insurance.  And this is the airport AVIS car rental where you don't have time to argue.
