While I was deployed with the US Army to Kuwait and Iraq over the last two years, I came home to discover 4 charges on my account from this company called "Connections", a company I never heard of.

I called my credit card company and with their advice, contacted the company via the telephone number on my bill.

I was notified by an employee that they would cancel my membership (which I didn't even know I had) and refund the latest charge to my account, $179.95. However, she could not help me with the rest of my charges.

I contacted my credit card company and did a security cancellation of my account to prevent them from doing this in the future and decided to call "Connections" again, not willing to take NO for an answer.

I spoke with several "supervisors" and was told that I could not speak to anyone higher than them, unless I wrote to consumer affairs for "Connections" in Omaha, Nebraska.

After being very persistent and sometime loud and quite frankly, rude, I was refunded an additional $119.95 and $109.95 from another of my apparently 2 accounts with this "Connections" company.

The final "supervisor" I spoke to informed me that she was unable to do anything else for me and quite frankly, was going above her head in refunding me the additional two refunds. She said that according to the "terms and agreements" I signed (over the phone, according to her) I was not entitled to any annual refunds except for the last billing period.

I explained to her that the zip code used to finally track down my "account" was a hotel room at the guest housing at my new Army installation. It just so happens that I checked into this hotel almost two years after the initial charge to my account.

None of the "supervisors" could explain how my credit card was charged any of these amounts. I told them I would report this to the Better Business Bureau, and I will. I see here on this web site that maybe I will forward a link to the BBB as well, since I am apparently not the only one who has had a run in with "Connections".

Ultimately, I received all of the refunds I am looking for except for a $96.00 charge from Feb 2002. I am writing the company to get that money back as well.

To anyone else with this trouble, DO NOT take NO for an answer and always ask to speak with someone higher than the person you are talking to. Additionally, if you tell them you WANT them to record this conversation, it may help.

While I was researching this further, I read a report at the BBB that says that the company insists that it has taped telephone conversations from everyone who "thinks" that they were ripped off by them. I asked to hear the tape that has me authorizing this charge, since I make it a habit NOT to conduct credit transactions over the telephone. I was told that it was not possible for me to hear this conversation. Apparently, after the State of California suing the company and Florida attempting to sue, the BBB is reviewing these "taped conversations" of alleged victims. I just wish they would have let me hear my voice on tape. I think they really don't have these tapes. In any event, I am awaiting the deposits from the three refunds I was told I would receive within 2-3 business days. I will keep updating this until the issue is resolved.
