I can't believe that they can get away with this,,i have been a client of thiers for almost 3 years, when i called and cancelled, they said fine, and since you have been such a good client we're going to give you 2 free months of internet use, well i said ok, but when i went to my bank, i also had an overdraft, so i found out what had caused it, aol had charged my account, so i called them, and i told them, that i had cancelled and that they had charged me another month, even though they said that i would recieve 2 free months.

Well, i talked for 2 days, and to 5 different people, and not one person could help, because i had to cancel my account at the bank, because they said that they could not stop aol from charging because they had access,so i had to give the bank my visa debit cards, and i didn't have the last four digits of the number, they would not even talk to me, security reasons they said, then one of the people i talked to said that i needed to go into the aol site and update all my information, including a new billing card????????? when i went to the billing site, it would not let me in, said it was invalid because billing method was invalid, and that they would charge me another $50.00 because the billing information was invalid....

I dropped AOL (Almost On Line) a few years back because of incredibly lousy service, being cut off in mid posting, etc. I had no problem with leaving because I declined each and every one of their "free" offers. When I want out, I want out, period. A word of advice: Forget e-mails. They have the force and power of a gentle breeze in spring. What does the job is a personal chuck of snail mail directed to the top guy. You will have a tough time finding the snail mail address for AOL as it is nowhere to be found on their website or in their promotional literature. It took a friend with some inside info to get it for me. Sadly, I no longer have it as I no longer have any business with AOL. I suggest that when you do call AOL, DEMAND a snail mail address. I had to choose another ISP. Earthlink was touted by a talk show host I admire and respect. I signed up and their service was acceptable. However, last spring I discovered that the Earthlink was founded by two Scientology heavy hitters. Check out www.earthlinksucks.com. One of the founders has just been convicted of a $600 million Ponzi scheme. I dropped Earthlink because I did not want a single penny of mine to end up in the cult's bank account. I'm now over at att.net. It has some operational problems, but they are not too bad. At least it is not part of a cult.

I am writing to the individual or employee of AOL who ever you are that wrote the rebuttal to Janice in Sacramento, CA. If you think AOL is so great, you had better go in and read the complaints as they pretty much all say the same thing.....AOL gives you free months when you try to cancel and then charges your bank account/credit/debit cards and they can hardly be stopped from doing so. I have had this experience with them personally, and it took an act of congress to get them stopped from debiting my account but I managed to do so without cancelling the whole checking account. They also debited my sisters checking account and credit card in the same month...she had to go report them to the credit card co and the bank to get her money back. When I talked to AOL they informed me that they were not in the business of offering free internet service and I informed her that they seem to be doing it to everyone that wants to cancel. They gave us "free" service for several months and then tried to debit my account not only once but twice....they are bad news. So who ever you are, you need to wake up and smell the roses......I am sure by the letter you wrote commending AOL that you are probably an employee trying to help them....don't bother!!! They are not worth helping....I was with AOL for several years, always being knocked off line, or not being able to get online due to heavy traffic. They always had an excuse. I put up with it as long as I could....As it stands now, if AOL was the only internet provider........... MY COMPUTER WOULD BE THROWN IN THE TRASH....I WILL NEVER USE AOL AGAIN.

I've been in financial situations where I needed to cancel my AOL service quite a few times over the years. AOL offered me the same two months free and sometimes just one month, but countless times. I've never had the experience you've described. It's always been free of charge and complimentary to me, the customer. My impression with AOL is that they are a very good company because they've not only extended free months to me, but they've done it numerous times throughout the years. I feel that this is quite rare when it comes to businesses now adays. I would be willing to bet this is either an isolated case or at worst, happens rarely and was due to someone on their end making a mistake. I know how frustrating it can be to be in that situation, but I don't believe this is typical for AOL. I recommend AOL highly.
