Just like everyone else in the United States, I receive an America On-Line (AOL) Internet disc in the mail at least twice a month. Well back in September of 2000, I decided to take advantage of the free service. I was not happy with the service because my Internet connection was always being interrupted.

When my service was no longer free, I called AOL to cancel. To keep me as a customer AOL extended my free service for 2 months. When I called to cancel after my time was up, AOL extended my service again for a few more months. This went on for about a year. After I called to cancel one last time, I was told I would not be billed and my service was canceled.

When I checked my Capital One credit card statement I noticed AOL billed me for their regular rate of $23 and their DSL rate of $46 dollars was charged to my bank account.

When I called to complain, I was given the run around. After making a few more phone calls to AOL, the customer service representative apologized for the billing error and offered to give me three months of service for free. I did not want any more free service from AOL AOL reversed the charge to my bank account and I was reimbursed for the DSL service but was never reimbursed $23 dollars for the other plan on my credit card.

I stopped using AOL's service back in November 2001. AOL has been billing my credit card account since October of 2001. I am currently working part time and I'm on a tight budget. Every time AOL accesses my account, I get a $25 dollar "Over-Limit" service fee charge from Capitol One Credit Card. Capitol One tells me I need to get the situation cleared up with AOL before they will remove the over-limit charges from my account.

Thanks to AOL, my credit card is "maxed-out" and my bank account is closed. Every time I call AOL, I get the run-around. A few days later I get a letter in the mail that confirms my AOL membership is canceled but my credit card statement shows that AOL billed me for the month.

My credit card account is infected by AOL. This happens every month. Seems like AOL is too big to care; I'm just one person. What can I do? I can't afford these charges and it is affecting my credit standing with my credit card company and my credit rating in general. Grandfather was right when he said, "You can't get something for nothing". Please help me.

We also have encountered problems with AOL except my problem stemed around our checking account. They did the same thing to us when we tried to cancel, they offered us free service time and time again. BUT they also debited our checking account for the FREE SERVICE. Try contacting the bank that your card is against and tell them it is an unauthorized charge and they should stand behind you. That is what we had to do with our bank. It can't hurt to try.......good luck.....I am sure our problems aren't over with them. You might want to contact the Consumer Protection Agency in your area for help.
