When I bought my (used) house, the seller bought American Home Shield for a year for me. It was pretty worthless - I'm glad I didn't pay for it. Here's what happened.

Within a few months the electric stove failed - the oven controls pushed out the back. I called, and they charged me $35 for a service call - the guy said "Yup, it's broke." They said I would have an option of either fixing the existing stove, with a $100 copay, or applying the extra toward a new stove. Next I know, the part is on order, and I have no say it the matter. The stove was 30 years old, and pretty much shot.

I finally got about $150 toward the new stove, which was over a thou (I wanted a good one; willing to pay something for that). $150 wouldn't even buy the cheapest model at Sears, and I paid $135 to get that.

I canceled after that year. I'm not the idiot they think I am.

How to beat AHS

Contact the Better Business Bureau online at bbb.com. AHS will respond back to them quickly. Make sure you get your own estimates or if the claim is old, have your receipts ready to upload. AHS has a AAA plus rating and they keep it that way by honoring their contract only when they have to with the BBB. The BBB doesn't have a clue as to how many people have issues but don't file with them. AHS's only concern are those claims they have to answer to the BBB about. I read a post that stated only one out of ten will complain and that means AHS only has to pay one out of ten claims they deny. What a racket! Be the one out of ten that gets your money. I did it on two different denials. One was almost a year old. I got a check from AHS on both claims. I called an honest contractor and they got the money to make the repair. AHS's contractors got nothing. Contact the BBB. I am passing this on to as many sites as possible hoping to get everyone to file a claim. It only took me 15 mintues to file and two weeks to get paid!
