This coincidentally happened the same week that the puppy mills bill HB 2470 passed. It made pet stores liable for selling ill puppies. HB 2470 specifies conditions under which pet dealers must provide refunds, replacement, or reimbursement if a dog is found to suffer from certain diseases or birth defects. This will offer recourse to purchasers who learn that their puppy has serious emotional or health problems. In many cases owners find themselves overwhelmed and the distressed dogs are given up to local humane societies. The bill also limits breeders to owning no more that 50 sexually intact dogs 2 years or older.

Besides limiting the number of dogs, the bill spells out exercise, space and cleaning requirements for pups. They can't be kept in stacked cages, and breeders must maintain health records for each dog, including the date of birth and size of litters. Pet stores must disclose information about the dog's breeder. The maximum punishment for violating the provisions is six months in jail, a $2,500 fine or both. The law goes into effect Jan. 1.

It's not surprising that Scamps Pet Center closed down. If you look at the events that have happened up until now, you can see why they closed their doors.

There have been many protests outside their stores. Scamps pet store was recently exposed in an undercover report by KGW Channel 8s Anne Yeager, who obtained veterinary records and interviewed multiple victims who have purchased sick and genetically defective puppies from Scamps. The story also tells how Scamps buys from puppy mills.

Ripoffreport Report Image link to www.kgw.com

The Radical Cheerleaders for Animal Rights performed shortly before IDA's Matt Rossell was forcefully tackled by Mall Security in front of Scamps, which also brought attention to Scamps selling their puppies from puppy mills.

Ripoffreport Report Image http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2009/02/386195.shtml

There have been multiple puppy mill raids recently everywhere, including one last month which is one of the nations largest raids in Kennewick WA, where more than 400 American Eskimo dogs were removed from a puppy mill that is being called "one of the worst cases" of animal abuse. 100 of the American Eskimo dogs have been sent to the Oregon Humane Society for adoption.

But that's not all. Salem Scamp's store manager Laura Lien, 59, was cited for animal neglect after two dogs and a rabbit were liberated by police from the store in Lancaster Mall on April 10 because of "poor health conditions." Ripoffreport Report Image http://portland.indymedia.org/en/2009/05/391068.shtml

So as you can see, it's not surprising that Michael Twain (Scamps President) is closing his doors of cruelty and neglect....hopefully forever.

Close them all down! Very good work and a very big thank you to IDA and the Rad Cheerleaders. You're the best and know how to get the job done.

To everyone who had a part in passing the Puppy mill legislation, and to all of you who helped to organize and participate in demos against Scamps - THANK YOU !!!!! from puppies, kittens and bunnies and me.

I wonder what they did with all the animals that were in the stores. Can anyone find out?

I saw big sale stickers when I passed by the LlOYd Center Scamps, and asked the customer service person there what was going on, and where the dogs were. She said they had a big sale, all dogs for $150 or something like that until they were all gone. I hope most of them went to good homes, but if not, they will prob end up in rescues/shelters at some point soon, and will hopefully find a better furever home at that time.

Another Scams bites the dust 06.Jun.2009 18:11

About time

Am certain that the animals will simply be moved to other Scams Pet Centers throughout Portland. That is their M O to "redistribute" the animals if they don't sell in one particular location. After all "they are just animals."

One Scams down and how many to go?

ALL Scamps stores are closed. I wasn't sure if I misread your comment or you possibly did not read the whole article. The ENTIRE SCAMPS Chain is out of business. There are no animals in Scamps at Lloyd Center and the Lancaster mall. People have been trying to call all the other scamps, but no one is answering the phones. So, it's not just one Scamps store...it's all of them :)

Great News 07.Jun.2009 18:29

The news just continues to get better all the time. Michael Twain will now have to go out and get a real job, one in which he does not act as a pimp selling animals for a profit.

Kudos to the new Puppy Mill Legislation 07.Jun.2009 19:32

I am thankful, thankful, thankful. As the adoptive mom of a puppy mill breeder from this area who has just been liberated a year this month - my heart soars for this new law (I am so glad Oregon took this issue on) and that this store closed. The animals in that store were sickly and sad. My hope is that they too found loving homes. One small, small step in the right direction.

Every year at Christmas for the past three years we have gone out to LLoyd Center and stood in the cold to protest Scamps and their big lies about where they get those expensive pups!!! I have tears in my eyes knowing that we have made one small step forward for the thousands of dogs who stand alone and helpless in cages year after year in our country, Thank God I live in Oregon!! A huge thank you to everyone who took this issue to heart and rose up to say No! we will not tolerate cruelty in our state!!! Thank You! Thank You!

I'm so thankful for the folks and everyone who helped pushed this law to take effect in Oregon. Every time my family and I would go to Beaverton Mall and we pass by the Scamps store, my heart would just sink when I see those poor and defenseless animals sitting in their cages day after day. I sigh in BIG relief that this store has FINALLY closed down and knowing that one more pet store/company is out of business because we have laws that protect animals from such cruelty!

So THANK YOU once again!

What happened to the dogs/animals they had in stock when they closed their doors? I'm so glad the puppy mill law was passed. If I could I would personally hunt them down and close them, but am concerned about animals that Scamps had when they closed

I cannot believe they stayed in business for as long as they have. They were a terrible company. I almost cried anytime I would see one of their stores. Thank God they are finally gone!!!

Where are the rest of the animals???? 17.Jun.2009 23:34

I'm thrilled that there are people (guardians) out there who are in the trenches for these voiceless victims rather than sitting back on their couch shaking their head in digust over one more puppy mill raid. But you can't tell me that Scamps managed to sell every animal, even the mice just in time for the doors to close???? Where are those animals? Scamps is probabaly too scared to drop them at shelters and rescues, so please someone rescue them. My mind goes to horrible scenarios when I know the atrocities Scamps has been capable of when these pets were entrusted in their care.

Scamps is horrible 5

By Animal Lover F. Scamp's Pet Ctr

First of all I also work at a veterinary clinic here in Beaverton, and I see many sick animals. 99% of the sick young ferrets come from Scamps. I was in there the other day just to ponder the horrifying ordeal, and suggested to a couple that they adopt, not buy. Scamps has been around since I was a child and I doubt they are going anywhere. It is all about the money for them, if it keeps rolling in (money) they are greedy as heck.

However there are things that we can do... like educate the potential customers. Animals are usually bought on a whim, and more information should be distributed about adoption agencies. How about Rabbit Advocates, Cascade Ferret Network, Cavy Rescues, or the Oregon Humane society? Volunteer for one of these organizations and help so many more of the our furry friends!

Should stop selling animals 1

By Ad A. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I come to the Cedar Hills Mall often and Scamp is a horrible place. Sometimes I try to avoid even looking at it but my child loves to stare at the puppies. Sometimes I feel I'm going to cry to see those pups seating in their feces, so bored, so SAD. Purchasing puppies from these places just encourage the owners to sell more puppies. Any responsible dog/cat owner KNOWS those little cages are SO INHUMANE, that place really makes me sick.

Maltese?? owner in Beaverton 1

By Sandy M. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I'm a little confused about something. There are so many reviews condemning Scamps for the "Puppy Mill" puppies. I got a Maltese pup, bought at Scamps, for Christmas in 2006. He was healthy and is my Sweet Baby Boy. However he is 15 pounds which to anyone who knows the breed usually indicates he has been cross bred with a Bichon Freis. We paid for a pure bred Maltese and were told he was registered with AKC. We have never received his papers applied for within a month of getting him.

My confusion comes in when all these people very adamantly say "Don't buy from Scamps!" What about those poor, sweet animals. Don't they deserve a home and love? I know it is a quandry. I know it is taking a chance on getting a sick or misrepresented animal, but what about their chance at a happy life. If someone can answer my questions, I would appreciate it.

Scamps supports puppy mills! 1

By libby j. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I purchased a puppy from SCAMPS five years ago.

He was flea infested/kennel coughing and was within his first yr diagnosed with auto immune disease. He requires steroids daily to stay alive--nice, eh?

I was told he was from Minnesota. What was an 8 week old puppy from minnesota doing in Oregon anyways? Pretty depressing to think of a puppy making a big-rig journey all the way here. Also, he has a severe reaction to a crate or any kennel situation bc of this traumatic early exposure.

Come to find out through me contacting the US Dept of Agriculture, who tracked down his puppy mill breeder, that he was in fact from Oklahoma. Nice, more lies SCAMPS.

There is nothing kind about their business model. They are rotten to the core.

Get out of the puppy mill business, SCAMPS!

Please stop supporting puppy mills when you buy from Scamps! 1

By Steph F. Scamp's Pet Ctr

Please stop selling dogs, cats, birds etc at Scamps. It is a disgrace to Oregon that your business is allowed to fill cages with puppy mill dogs and cats. Do not buy pet store dogs, cats etc as long as there are animals in shelters, rescues etc. If you purchase a "purebred" animal from pet stores, you may run into enormous costs financially and emotionally. View the puppy mill pictures available anywhere on the Internet and think twice before spending considerable money for a pet store animal.

I love you. You have been saying everything that has been going through my head for a long time. I just wanted to say more power to you. And there is a lot of people who are like us, in believe Scamps is a wonderful place.. not "evil" like others have put it. And we like to go and play with all the puppies too. I myself have adopted three wonder puppies. And my daughter has adopted two. We love our dogs and would not give them up for the world. So I just want to say thank you Scamps. We love you.

Great place to work 5

By Carole G. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I worked for Scamp's for some eight years, and at one time managed the Beaverton Store. I can tell you this. The staff does everything in their power to keep the animals healthy. All cages are sterilized daily; no dog is moved from one kennel to another without the kennels getting a thorough cleaning.

When I worked there, we did not get dogs from puppy mills, but rather from local breeders. Animals are now kept behind glass, if possible, to prevent customers from carrying disease to the puppies. Many diseases, like Parvo Virus, are spread through oral challenge. Customers go from one kennel to another, sticking their fingers into the cages so the pups can lick them, risk spreading diseases they unknowingly may have picked up elsewhere. For example, when Parvo first appeared in the dog population in the 1980s, a Vet clinic treating the dogs kept having the disease spread from infected animals to non-infected ones kept in a completely separate area of the clinic. The source was finally traced back to a deck of cards kept in the staff break room.

What I keep reading here is emotional, not logical. I love critters but the one thing I learned working at Scamps is that these little fur-people get diseases just like humans do sids, epilepsy, diabetes, breast cancer, heart murmurs, asthma, arthritis and so on. No one can "guarantee" that an animal is never going to be sick. But every effort is made to make sure customers are not sold sick animals. After all, what is the advantage to Scamp's of knowingly selling sick animals? That costs much more in dollars, heart ache and reputation then providing healthy animals.

And, Scamp's carries a license from the State Department of Agriculture and is inspected on a regular basis by a state vet. Every complaint received is investigated by the State Vet. They monitor things like temperature, cleanliness, health of the animals and store records. In my years as a manager, I never received a violation, not did I ever hear of any of the stores being citied.

Running a pet store is not like any other retail business. Customers do get quickly attached to their new pets and if anything goes wrong, it's not like returning a pair of shoes. Scamp's has been in business for very long time. The reason is simple, they are what a pet store is suppose to be.

Let me tell you a lil something bout your "friendly" neighborhood scamps 5

By Leasa B. Scamp's Pet Ctr

A Few years back My mother and I bought a couple of puppies from the Beaverton Mall (Cedar Hills Crossing) Scamps. Upon our arrival home from the pet store, my younger brothers new puppy started to cough and gag till he threw up upon the floor. We were thinking maybe the poor pup had a tummy ache or ate too much, so we just ignored it and went to bed.

Well the next morning I went down to gather my backpack and books for school and found the poor little guy deceased under the coffee table. i immediately woke up my mother and told her what had happened.

We drove to scamps that afternoon and oh man, my mother gave them a mighty fine talking to. She walked right up to the store manager and said "Now I dont know how you guys are running your little show here, but the employee who sold me the Akita/ Shepard/ Wolf Hybrid yesterday told me there were no health issues and looked me straight in the eyes and told me the dog was in excellent health!" the manager had the nerve to ask if the dog was okay. My mother blankly stated "NO, the dog is dead!"

The man had us bring in Akitto, what we had named him, and the diagnosis ended up being that the poor pup had Parvo. The other dog we had purchased the same day we bought Akitto was named Bear. Now Bear started having the same symptoms as Akitto did. We took her to the vet the very next day. Now here is the sucky part. She didnt come back.

both dogs we bought had parvo. Its contagious and they had been locked in random kennels with other dogs at the store. so those dogs probably got the sickness too.

Scamps obviously doesnt inspect the buyers, breeders, and the dogs period before buying them up and selling them to unknowing customers. Playing musical Kennels with all the puppies there, not knowing who has this and who caught that, is wrong and needs to be stopped. If you know a dog needs medical attention or the situation seems suspicious to you. Dont buy the dog! Contact your local animal Rescue or Law enforcement and have them check it out.

Scamps needs to be shut down and be known for their lying, sickening employees.

don't do it 4

By smith R. Scamp's Pet Ctr

Scamps puppies and kittens are some of the worst conditioned animals i see at my job. I work at a veterinary clinic and scamps animals that come in ALWAYS have major health issues. Before they are even adopted they are given several kinds of antibiotics that scamps has "left over", this creates super bugs in the puppies and kittens that make their shot of getting over what ever major issue they are having that much harder. Get your puppy at the humane society, from a breeder, even a free box kitten is likely to be healthier than these guys. Don't support animal abuse and kitten/puppy mills.

Youre supporting mills and buying mutts 5

By A F. Scamp's Pet Ctr

Those of you that do not see what is going on are truly blind. You people that buy from Scamps are paying hundreds and thousands of dollars for mutts. Dogs that are mixed breeds, uncared for, unaltered and usually ill. Larger dogs cannot grow properly when confined to a small area, as it is with ALL the Scamps stores. I do not shop there. I ONLY adopt and guess what, I have PURE BRED dogs that didnt cost a quarter of what Scamps charges and were in the best of health. You are all so savvy to be able to work the computer, so look up puppy mills and backyard breeders if you dont want to believe the truth listed here. You will learn what they are, what they do and how they only breed for money, not health. This is what you people are buying when you shop at Scamps. You can get any mix of these dogs or full bred at shelters and rescues. Look into it.

It's a cute puppy.. What's the big deal? 5

By Steve M. Scamp's Pet Ctr

My oh my.. What a bunch of bleeding hearts.. I wish all of you that deplore the "terrible" conditions that the pets for sale are kept would devote 1/10 of that energy into maybe caring about "human" kids.. Oh wait.. thats right I'm sure all of you are active foster parents right?.. Anyway guess what? My wife and I went into the Scamps in Beaverton Saturday.. We saw a cute puppy.. We played with the cute puppy.. Gee he played with us.. Yes he was in a cage but gosh that seemed safer for him than for him to be running around the store getting stepped on by little kids.

We liked the puppy so we bought him!!

Since Scamps is not set up as a church and isn't supported by chairitable giving I don't understand why it is so "evil" for them to try to sell animals..( Side note here, we usually get our dogs from the humane shelter but as they now seem to think they are selling AKC dogs there as evidenced by the price they now charge to "adopt" a dog) It was almost cheaper to "buy" a puppy from Scamps..( By the way, they do deal on the price) Now I know a bunch of you politically correct whacko's will undoubtably hate me for saying this but.. I bought a puppy and I have to say He is really cute and very happy to be home with us and God forbid I don't think he gives a Rat's a*s if he came from a puppy mill or not.. As a matter of fact our son was so moved by our "rescue" of this little healthy bundle of joy that he and his fiance went the next day to the same "evil" place and "rescued" one of their own. You know what? The store was clean, The clerk was helpful and caring and try as you might to make me think so, I really don't think I am going to go to hell for buying my puppy.

I managed for Scamp's, I DO know how they work. 1

By Frank C. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I cannot believe some of the ppl who are trying to defend Scamp's. I understand business is business, they are trying to survive. However, here are the facts. They under-pay their employees. Understaff their stores resulting in lack of animal care. Most employees working there (like I did) stay because they feel bad for the animals, and hope they can make a difference. They mark up the dogs/kittens 4x what they pay for them (at least, sometimes more) they do anything possible to avoid taking sick and sometimes dying animals to the vet. The vets they work with can't stand them. The puppies absolutely come from mills out of state most of the time. They take in sick animals all the time because of their greed. I used to refuse kittens and puppies with mites and fleas and goopy eyes all the time but it was frowned upon. I have personally known ppl who bought purebred dogs from them that later had all kinds of genetic problems and they suffered with pain and died young after tons of $ spent at vets to try and make them more comfy in life. I have personally seen many, many, dead dogs, cats, rodents, etc. go in the freezer. There are always exceptions even in healthy conditions, but they had way more than normal deaths there. I can't go in to the stores now. I know what those animals go through. The employees try, but it's hard when they are expected to sell a dog for a thousand dollars. Their main office is where they used to take in 'bulk' animals. Birds, bunnies, ferrets, rodents, etc. It's gross there. They were then caught, packed and driven from store to store, I know because I used to sometimes help deliver them. Please don't encourage this business by buying animals and supplies there, even if you fall head over heels with a cute animal. It was one of the most depressing, sad, and humiliating places to work ever.

Completely Heartless. 1

By Katie J. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I hate Scamps and always will. The other reviews are right..all they see is money. They couldn't care less about giving the pets an actual home. I'm in Scamps very very frequently to see how things are, and it's so sad and heartbreaking. The small animals are waaaaay overcrowded, some on the bottom shelf climb the cage to the top so they can stick their noses out and try to get fresh air. The kittens are also overcrowded in their small cage to the point where they sleep in their LITTERBOX. They are completely lifeless and don't respond to anyone...one even had a gash in her throat. It was disgusting so I asked about it and the workers just said "Uh...I dunno". The puppies are overpriced and ignored completely, some puppies have been in there for about 7 months because of the over priceness. And YES they DO come from puppy mills. The workers there do try their best because they are animal lovers, and they are nice people. The manager there is a greedy a-hole though. End of story.

Dont Bath or Groom/ Puppies are flown in! 1

By concerned c. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I previously walked into Scamps Pet Store Cedar Hills about a week ago and noticed most of the dogs had matted hair and long finger nails, one of the dogs even had a skin problem. I really doubt they take care of there animals...its gross. Another day I was getting Starbucks and was walking into the mall and saw that three puppies came straight from PDX airport in travel kennels. Local breeders my a*s.

A decent place 3

By Michael C. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I have been to scamps(cedar hills beaverton) quite a few times, as my wife likes to look at the puppies. I agree that the situation of the cats and puppies is not ideal. But its not all that bad. Many puppies get to come out and play with prospective owners. All the employees I have observed handle the animals carefully. They may not be the most knowlegable, but they know basic info and and they can recommend you to people who may know more. They do sell all their dogs. The longer a dog stays, the lower the price goes. All dogs find homes. the ones in the front window get more attention and have more space than the ones in back. Those in back, although staying in smaller kennels, have more comfortable grates to sleep on. they get toys, bones, pig ears, etc. And the kennels are kept quite clean. Once in a while, a piece of poop goes un-noticed for a while, but generally they are well cared for. I think one improvement that could be made, would be a larger area/section of the store in which the puppies can live and play within a small fence. Anyways, I hope to find out more about the breeder situation. I also have 2 dogs rescued from the humane society and they are great. I definitely recommend looking there first.

I used to work there...DO NOT SUPPORT SCAMPS!!!!!!!!!!!! 1

By Anonymous Scamp's Pet Ctr

I know the ins and outs of this company. I worked at a Scamps Pet Center for 2 years. I was a great employee, however I constantly struggled with the humane perspective of having caged puppies and kittens. Now that being said, I did my best to keep a clean store. The company did not allow me to have more than one person on the floor at a time. Illegal as that is, I did my best. I couldn't just quit my job because I have three children and my husband was in school at the time. I know that Scamps get's their puppies from a couple select breeders. But they mass produce puppies of several different breeds and mixes. I do not believe anyone could give quality health care or comfort care to that many puppies. The corp. office of Scamps is in Portland, OR. They claim to truly care about the animals, but all they see are $$$. I did my best to care for each and every animal that came into my store.

People... Use your brains and think 5

By Melissa S. Scamp's Pet Ctr

Scamps is a great company. They really do care about the animal they have. I know just about everyone who works at this Scamps and other and they do the best job they can with what they have. They do not get their dogs from puppy mills and are completely against them so back off on that subject because it's not even close to the truth. In answer to the lack of blankets and toys the animals usual don't stay there long enough to need a blanket and they all have toys. They're a great company and give great service and I would reccoment them to anyone looking for a pet.

99 % of puppies at Scamp's do come from puppy mills 1

By Kelly P. Scamp's Pet Ctr

Put a stop to the inhumane treatment of animals and pet stores that continue the cycle of puppy mills, like Scamps. Though they claim they don't use puppy mills, they do! Think about it, any responsible breeder wouldn't give their puppies to Scamp's, who doesn't even interview the people adopting the animals.

If you would like a puppy, go to the shelter or pound. Their are so many great pets there that get put to sleep daily, for the only reason that there is not enough room. If you are set on a specific breed, their are many breed specific rescue organizations.

For people who would still like to use a breeder, find one that is responsible. Quality breeders care about the quality of life their dogs will have when they go to their new homes and will interview you about your home.

I refuse to buy even a dog toy from Scamps, and hope you do the same.

I just walked by Scamps this morning and was shocked and angered by the inhumane manner in which these animals are being treated... small cages, no toys, and the most pathetic are the wire floors. I asked the seedy guy where he gets his puppies and he denied puppy mills and said that he gets tired having to constantly answer that question. I suggested that he put a sign up stating that they absolutely check every breeder and that they guarantee that the puppies do not come from mills. He did not respond to the suggestion. I don't believe him. If he cared about their animals at all, they wouldn't be contained in such a inhumane way. It is a horrible place.

I got a sick feeling......... 1

By Lori C. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I was at the Scamp's on Cedar Hills today. I originally went to that mall to go to the Powell's book store, but saw the Scamps and went in. I'm not sure if that was a good idea or not. They had several puppies in the front window. A boxer, a husky and several others I can not remember. I was saddened, angered and disgusted by their conditions. No blankets, toys, or any comforts at all. Just a small cage with food and water. None of them responded when I gently tapped the windows to get their attention. The boxer and several others looked up at me with the saddest eyes I have ever seen. I went in to see if there was any one I could talk to. Noone around. I walked through the whole store. These were not lively, happy puppies. I went back out and stared at them for a while longer before I left. What will become of them? It seems as if they are not being cared for properly and they absolutely do not deserve this treatment. I will NEVER buy anything in that or any other Scamp store, I have seen one also at the Lloyd Center. I wish there was something that could be done to help those poor puppies that have no say in their own future. defe

Springfield, Oregon Scamps selling unfixed, sick, failure to thrive kitten 1

By Sarah W. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I very rarely go into pet stores to purchase my supplies, but this afternoon I was at a local nail salon and found it convenient to purchase the dog collar I needed right around the corner at Scamps.

I went to the front desk and waited while the cashier rang up my order. I turned around and noticed a cage with a sign hanging on it that read "Kittens for sale, $89.99". Resting in the corner, I found a sickly, malnourished, tiny black and white kitten. I asked about it, and the cashier told me she knew the kitten was sick. She said it had lost weight because of an eye infection. I asked her if it was still for sale, and she said yes.

That evening, I called and talked with the manager-in-training (the main manager was on vacation for a week). She told me that last night a couple bought the kitten for the $89.99, but left it there while they were getting their housing situation set up. This woman told me that the cat had never been to the vet, although they had put it on two days of antibiotics. I asked her if she thought the cat needed to go to the vet. She said no. She said it had lost all of it's weight over the last few days because it was 'depressed', and that was it's main problem, aside from the eye infection. I asked her to please remove the kitten from the front of the store and get it some medical attention, along with a soft place to sleep, with some heat. (It was placed next to the front door where it was cold as people walked in and out of the store.) She told me that everything was okay, and that she didn't need to do anything else.

I asked this manager-in-training how much cat experience she had. She said, 'Enough, I own two cat of my own'. I asked her if she thought she had the expertise to make decisions regarding the care of the kitten, and she said, 'Yes'. I asked her what would happen if the kitten died. She said it wasn't a problem of hers, because the people who came in last night had already paid the money for it and decided not to take it to the vet.

I personally think it's outrageous that our community is supporting a store that is contributing to our overpopulation problem by selling unfixed cats and kittens in the first place, but even more horrendous is the fact that they are selling unfixed, SICK kittens to people, without a conscience.

Common sense needs to outweigh Scamp's lack of ethical policies when it comes to buying these animals.

No guarantees 3

By Virginia B. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I was looking at a beautiful little Italian greyhound at the store in Eugene. Very tempting and sweet but when I asked about the breeder, the sales girl said she couldn't tell me until I purchased the puppy. First red flag!!! When I asked if I could have the puppy checked by my Vet before the two weeks were up for the guarantee, she said no that I would have to use their Vet. Another red flag! I feel for the dogs there as one other time I was browsing, a puppy was eating it's own feces and with no oversight from the staff..I had to point it out before anything was done. I bought my beautiful Manx cat from a pet store but I feel fortunate that he is allright and would never do it again. If they won't guarantee their animals, why would you buy them? They can be extremely expensive when you have to take them in for treatment. So Sad.

Fraudulent! 1

By Nichole N. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I purchased a dog from Scamps in Tacoma WA. My family & I were assured that the dog was a purebred and that she was AKC registered. Five moths later after calling repeatedly to get the paperwork we received a form from ACA (American Canine Association) a bogus organization that sells nothing more than fancy blue & white paper designed to make you think that you have a quality animal. You can go to their website & click on the breeder portion to register a puppy & for $10.00 more register the parents without any documentation!!! The dog we purchase is undergoing DNA testing, (there is strong suspicion by the veterinarian that she is inbreed) and when we get the inevitable POSITIVE results we will be filing a complaint with the Humane Society ('Pet Seller Complaint form', www.hsus.org - if you need a copy for similar purposes). Obviously the scamps staff have been less than helpful...in fact they have been fraudulent. I'm hoping that enough people will file complaints with the 'Humane Society Of The United States' that eventually they will have enough for a class action lawsuit against Scams..oops I mean Scamps. This type of class action suit has already been filed against a similar company in Florida, Florida has similar regulations to those in Washington and Oregon. If you have been Scammed or mislead about a pet purchased from Scamps fill out the 'Pet Seller Complaint Form' too.

Scamps works through brokers and this is where they get their dogs. Please check your AKC papers for verification if you don't believe me. Google the breeder and find out who they are and how they're rated. I checked my dog's papers (that I bought from this Scamps on Cedar Hills) and he is from one of the WORST mills in Missouri.

Please rescue a dog or buy from a private breeder. Most of all, please spay or neuter your pet(s)!

To all of the "animal lovers" 3

By Anonymous Scamp's Pet Ctr

I get so tired of the comments from the people apparently put on this earth to correct the animal injustices.. it always seems to go to far. it starts out so well meaning, and then gets ruined by unintelligent, unresearched, and poorly thought out comments. Personally, I bet those puppies get more care, and FOR SURE more attention than their dog companions at home. These pet stores place so many animals in homes of there own! its a lucky dog that ends up at Scamps.

Scamp's is a great place 5

By Erik I. Scamp's Pet Ctr

Everytime I go to scamp's i find the store to be as clean as can be expected for a pet store. The staff is always very knowledgeable and eager to help, and they take the time to answer all your questions and any questions you could possibly come up with concerning the pet you want. Most pet stores just want you to buy something and leave, however this is not the case with scamp's. I have bought A gecko a scorpion many many accessories and soon to be a few fish from them. Everytime i have gone in to buy an animal they always make sure that i am completely ready to take home that pet. I went in the other day to buy a fish tank and accessories and some fish, but i was recommended to first go home and set up the tank for a few days and bring a sample of the water back to be tested before i brought home any fish. Any other place would have let me pick out fish and take them home no questions asked. There are probably 3 or 4 pet stores closer to my house than Scamp's, but this is the only place I would go for my pet needs. If you say you had a bad experience then you probably had a bad day and went in expecting to have a bad experience, I worked retail for years I know how it goes, next time go in with good expectations and I am sure you will see things differently, if not don't put them down go somewhere else.

not from puppy mills? 3

By Kimberly S. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I asked the girl working who the breeders were, she responded they were all AKC registered and came from Missouri, Ohio as well as Oregon. Ohio and Missouri are 2 of the "puppy mill capital" states. I also know most puppy mill bred dogs are AKC registered. All you need is 2 registered parents and the offspring qualify, they don't care who breeds them. The puppies I saw seemed very healthy and yes they smell from the enclosures and probably the staff not catching the need to clean up immediately which is to be expected. Even puppy mills can put out good looking dogs. If the broker that sells the puppies does their job well they will all look healthy, have those nice fat puppy tummies and we the consumer will never know the difference, but there is also the fact that no reputable breeder would put a pup in a pet store window. Those pups stay with the mother until 10 - 12 weeks minimum and they want to know where the puppies are going and have a contract that says they get the pup back if the pup isn't working for the buyer.

You don't know what your talking about 5

By kevin a. Scamp's Pet Ctr

My fiance and I are avid supporters of Scamps pet stores. We also know most of the employee's and we know some of the distributors and who ever thinks that they use puppy mills you are stupid and obviously you have never asked one of the employees about the animals because they are really knowlegable and about the smeel if you put that many animals in one place its gonna smell. Do you personally follow your dog around with a baggy and catch the POOP as it comes out? because they don't either and i know that they are addimant about cleaning the cages other wise why would they have someone in each store at 6 am to clean now if you still have a problem with them then make a comment and i'll disprove it!

STOP THIS CRUELTY 1

By Anonymous Scamp's Pet Ctr

July 22, 2007

Dear Scamps Pet Center,

I would like to inform you of a concern that I have. I have a complaint about your store service. This, I would hope, is a concern of inhumanity, although your business is suffering as a result.

As I passed your window display at the Cedar Hills mall today, I was pained to see the conditions in which the living animals are in. Specifically the dogs, cats, kittens and puppies. Although I am sure that the purpose of your store is to profit, and the priorities are set around the goal of luring customers, under no circumstances does that give you the right to put animals in a state of cruelty as you have done. Even if you dont physically abuse them, the environment in which they spend what I assume is the majority of their day is unhealthy and unfair for them. As a pet store, you should be the example of how animals need to be treated.

By displaying animals whose nature is to run and play in extremely small, uncomfortable spaces for any length of time, it is easy to see that your focus is benefiting for money only. The animals might as well be merchandise on a shelf. Only animal lovers have any right to have a role in determining an animals future.

I didnt take the time to further look into how your animals are treated, such as where they spend their time when they arent being displayed (which I certainly hope is not in what could hardly even be a rabbit cage) but even minimal time in the conditions that these dogs and cats are living in is unhealthy to them. I did not purchase anything in your store today, nor will I ever if I am supporting such environments for animals that your store provides. If a space and environment needed for such animals as dogs or cats can not be provided by your store, then you obviously should not be taking the responsibility of having these animals.

I am surprised to see a pet store in Portland with the issues that this store has, as the rest have made the transformations from the unhealthy, unfair, sickening old ways. Please take no more time in making sure these very necessary changes happen.

To all the people who gave them bad reviews 5

By Melissa S. Scamp's Pet Ctr

I happen to know EVERYONE who works there and they take the best care of all the animals and I know for a fact that they get their animals from breeders and wouldn't DARE go through a puppy mill. If people went in to the shop and asked questions of the employees and quite having prejudiced opinions you would realize that they have a clean store and the animals are clean. They can't go around and pick up poop every second. They have other things they have to do. They are well knowledgeable about everything. To lay to rest they problem people seem to be having with the hermit crabs. Give them a break they check them when they can which may not be all they time but so what. People who have written previous reviews please think about what you wrote because there honestly wasn't one truthful thing in any of them

I feel sorry for those animals! 2

By Never E. | Insider | Rank: 27,045 Scamp's Pet Ctr

I have been to Scamp's many times and every time I go there, the hermit crabs have no water or food, or both. Hermit crabs require temperatures in the range of 70-85 degrees and humidity between 70 and 90, approx. They need these conditions in order to breathe properly. Scamp's does not have a temperature gage in the tank, but they do have a humidity gage. It always reads between 35 and 40! I cannot remember how many times I've been in there and saw dead crabs in their tank. One day I counted 17 of them! And when I inform the workers there, they act like it's no big deal. On one occasion I even heard the salesgirl telling a man who was buying crabs how easy they are to care for. Most of the information she gave him was false. I've only bought hermies from there in order to save them. This is one of the worst pet stores I have ever seen.

PROS: Hermit crab prices are resonable.

CONS: Poor conditions. Uninformed sales people. Prices on alot of items are high.

Don't buy from Scamps! 1

By Tiffany R. | Insider Expert | Rank: 4,801 Scamp's Pet Ctr

Scamps is known for using puppy mills for their stores. If you don't know what that is, that is where they breed a female over and over in horrible conditions until she dies, just to sell her puppies. They are not only expensive, the store stinks and the employees don't even seem to like the animals. I don't even go in there anymore.

PROS:

CONS: Stinks, use puppy mills, bad service, expensive

My family and I think that this is one of the best pet store. They spend a little time with the animals and work with you to see if that is the right pet for you and your family. I also like all they have to choose from as far a supplies and toys that makes it a lot of fun.

I find things to be expensive at all Scamps Pet Stores and the selection is limited. I also think that the animals they keep there are bordering on abuse. The cages they keep them in are small and dirty. I always wish I could set those poor puppies free.

We were very please with our purchase of our dog, Barney. He is now 10 years old. However, he was very expensive and we were told he was a mix between a chihuahua and beagle. He is NO WHERE near either of those breeds. They told us he'd be about 12lbs at adulthood and he now weighs 35lbs. Puppies sold here are overpriced and you are taking your chances if you think you're getting the bread you are tol you are. I wouldn't trade my dog for anything, but I wont buy another dog from Scamps.

Animal Death Beyond Imagination! 05.Jul.2009 15:41

An employee from 20 years ago

I worked for Scamps for two years. It was beyond imagination the extent to which death took place at the Beaverton Mall. With hundreds of finches, parakeets, and other birds. With thousands of fish. With twenty-five dogs. With all the other kittens, lizzards, snakes and other creatures as well. The daily death count was stagering! Part of the daily routine was gathering the dead. Bodies were thrown in with the dog excrement, news paper, ect in the garbage can out back. A quarentine area was maintained in the back with one eyed puss filled kittens and what ever. Those were the ones waiting for death. All of this was just part of the business of selling pets. I still have a flash-back from this one particular sick american eskimo puppy that I took back from a customer because it was too expensive to salvage. (over the $150.00 limit) It was crying with it's little teeth quivering. It was so sick. It came that way from the breeder. I had to walk it over to the vet at the end of the mall parking lot to have it put to sleep..........It beaks my heart ever time I see one, even today.
