Had my '89 Jaguar scheduled for a normal transmission fluid/filter change at a local Aamco. I had no problems or concerns with the tranny, as it was working perfectly (and had been road-tested by the shop). I was quoted approx. $95. (The dealer estimate was $350, so I was saving money here...)

I had heard or Aamco's terrible reputation, but I stayed and watched the work, and did not authorize anything beyond the fluid/filter change. (I hoped that this would protect me). These scumbags, removed the pan, drained the fluid, and "determined" that "2nd gear was chatterting" and refused to change the filter. They stated that I would need a rebuild, and the cost would be $3,000. I refused. They tried to convince me that if I drove the car at all (even the 5 miles back to work) that the tranny would fail... Again, this was a car that had NO problems with the transmission.

That was 2 months ago. I drove for about a month before I had the filter changed elsewhere. Their tactics were extremely high-pressure, trying to frighten me into getting this work done. My loss was only the $40, so I was somewhat lucky. One note: My car uses a tranny filter that they do not normally stock and takes 1-2 days to arrive. They were supposed to have ordered the filter in advance. I found later that they never had ordered the filter, and (obviously) had no intention of performing the service for which they were contracted.

Just a quick update (02/05/02). A call to Aamco's Customer Service 800# was, surprisingly, a painless experience. They picked up the phone after a (not unreasonable) time on hold. The customer service rep took down my info, called the owner of Jacksonville Aamco that ripped me off, and within a few minutes, called me back!

It took a week of back-and-forth stuff while they checked out my story with the jag dealer, but this morning they called and offered to reimburse the $42. So, assuming that the credit actually hits my credit card...

Anyway, I made Aamco aware of the existence of this web site. I believe that the 'Rip-Off report' that I filed here was part of the reason for such a fair outcome.
