This letter was sent to corporate back in February of 2022:

This letter is to address an outstanding, prevalent, chronic and ongoing issue at the King Soopers located in the Orchard-Holly Shopping Center located at 6000 S. Holly St., Greenwood Village, Co, 80111.

On December 15, 2021, I-Mariah Markus- came into Kings Soopers at Holly to utilize their restroom and to also purchase items and other general customer utilizations. When I went into the restroom I noticed that someone was already in one of the stalls and that they were taking to “blowing it up.” As was clear in the very pronounced smell emanating out of the stall. I’m homeless and use King Soopers bathrooms and other stores a lot to be able to keep my hands clean in the face of chronic homelessness brought on by a lot of personal and private circumstances and further impeded by other impairments. It’s not a foreign thing to me.

I was washing my hands when I noticed an employee of the store walk out of the stall. It was the cleaning lady I noticed that is usually in charge of overseeing the facilities and other areas of the store, wearing gloves. And then proceeded to walk to do the door and grab-full hand-on the door handle. While shooting me the dirtiest glare she could, all without even stopping to wash her hands and proceeded to open the door and walk out. I continued washing my hands and trying to focus on what I had to do that day.

Until I noticed a second person coming out of the other stall-the assistant manager by the name of Janelle, I believe. The manager I recall has long dark brown hair and from what I can recall drives a grey subaru outback and has profiled me before in the past having even gone so far-more than three years ago-as to even follow me into the restroom just to see if I was shoplifting. Among other things that signal as clearly having nothing else of importance going on in her life to the point of having to take up an issue with me using the bathroom to wash my hands and leave water on the countertop.

I have been homeless for more than five years come September. I have had to work solely, completely, on my own, by myself 100% just to try and get back on my feet all while dealing with a severe impairing disability I have yet to even get compensation or benefits for. I have literally been waiting for nearly the last three years just to even get SSI and I am on a seven year waitlist just to even get a hearing with VA for benefits on top of that. I was enlisted in the Colorado Air National Guard for more than four years as a reservist.

I do not have so called friends anymore just from ending up homeless. I do not have family I can turn to for anything and is more of a danger to my health and safety than anything else. I have literally absolutely nothing and nobody but myself to turn too and rely on for everything. And the only means I have right now is just what I can bring in on pan handling. Add on top of that being homeless in Denver, Colorado of all places. Which can give Texas and Arizona a run for their money in terms of just how the homelessness is-atop the fact that I seriously even “get it” just even going into the park stall down the road and other places just to even try to do anything for hygiene. Gyms are just as bad for hostility and other abuse when your homeless. And other stores can get so bad at times for hostility it is almost not even worth going in some days.  Hotels are only if you can afford it or are willing to “exchange” “something” “for it.” And unless you’re trespassing, utilizing one of the so called “resources” downtown, or if you have somebody you can rely on like that-options tend to be limited. And can impact a lot.

After the assistant manager came out and left. I proceeded to walk out and go take care of the stuff I had to do that day. To then happen upon seeing and overhearing the assistant manager I believe is named Janelle delegating to one of her employees to “write down,” how much water I had left on the counter. Alongside saying-at another point in time-that she is “building a case against me,” to essentially get me “axed,” from the store. For simply being homeless and using a restroom.

Since then, in the preceding six to seven months since that day-I have personally seen, witnessed and experienced the cleaning lady walk out of the stall after “blowing it up,” always while wearing plastic gloves and then going straight into cleaning or doing whatever else she does with her day. I have seen this happen upwards of more than half a dozen times so far. She never removes her gloves while she going into the stall and she never removes them even while she is exiting the stall. And it’s pretty clear that she keeps them on while in there as gloves are pretty freaking audible to hear when someone is taking them off or putting them on. The gloves are surgical and are usually meant for single use.

And never proceeds to even wash her hands after she is done in there with her gloves off or even the more gross thing of washing your hands with your gloves on. As I have seen before in other places and other stores. And she has never done either of those. This has been the case every single time I have used this store to wash my hands since that December 15, 2021 event. I recall once actually even seeing her really going to work and ensuring the cleanliness of the chicken deli counter where you can pick up heated and ready to eat chicken tenders and other hot items.

The cleaning lady in question is short-about 5’4.” Usually wears a black and white zig-zag stripped vest, never has a name tag on and also frequently likes to stand and try and intimidate me while I’m trying to wash my hands and has essentially run me out before for either what I can guess is “taking too long,” or “being in her way.”

This has all come to a head since then as the hostility and other such tensions with the store just for me being homeless and utilizing a restroom and generally just being a customer have gotten to a point where any other avenues have failed. I chose to bypass bringing this up to the management at Holly and instead address this letter to corporate just given the long list of past issues and tensions with this store and the overall general attitude that it’s been since I first started coming there more than four years ago and more so as of recently in the last year.

It may not be all that much of a personal belief to wash your hands after taking a s**t with some people but, it is a long valued and highly cherished tradition of mine-most especially in the face of crippling circumstances and other such things that have me literally waking up in the dirt more often than not.

I have no problem posting this letter to other websites or forums if need be and utilizing any and all other avenues available in regards to this or any other problems that may continue to arise.

**It should be noted that after sending this letter to corporate the mens bathroom oddly and suspiciously became “out of service” due to property damage and a rather “relieved” look on the one of the managers faces. He drives a red trio looking hatchback with a license plate titled “deception.”

Stay posted for further updates.
