My furnace broke during record cold temperatures. The vendor came and replaced the motor, but two days later, the motor caught on fire. American Home Shield agreed to replace the furnace but won't cover the duct or flu work that is required in order to replace the furnace. They are calling the duct and flu work "modifications" although technically, these things are not modifications but necessary work in order to replace the furnace. The other problem is that they are taking way too long to ship the parts out. The furnace broke on January 13th, 2024. I can't remember the exact timeframe for when it was discovered a furnace replacement was needed but I know that the vendor requested the parts from American Home Shield on January 25th. As of today, Feburary 2nd, those parts have still not been shipped by American Home Shield. I have talked to multiple customer service representatives at American Home Shield. Unfortunately, they do not have any power to either contest the coverage or speed up the shipping process.

Stop wasting  your money on home warranties, they are all a total ripoff.  If you take the money you would have spent on the home warranty and put it in a savings account, you will come out ahead.  And you won't have to wait weeks to have your claims denied for "rust" or "power surges" or "misuse" or whatever else they come up with.

There's a reason these policies seem like a good deal.  These companies will do everything to delay and deny large claims.  So you will be paying $1500 a year plus deductibles to maybe get $100 worth of minor repairs done by the worst contractors in your area.

The "modifications" ploy is a way to get contractors to agree to do furnace installs for $200 or whatever ridiculous fee they pay them.  And the actual furnace is very cheap, probably well under $1000 for the absolute bottom-of-the-barrel model they will send you.  So the contractor will charge you a couple of grand for "modifications", which in reality pay for their labor cost.  And they are going to do the worst imaginable job installing it, so you will have to call in a real professional a year or two from now to re-do the job correctly.

If you file a complaint with the BBB or the state attorney general they will probably agree to refund your policy to make you go away.  I would suggest doing that and putting the money towards a furnace install from a reputable local contractor.
