Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

The process was simple. Our home burned almost completely down (later condemned) in a matter of minutes after a freak grease fire in our kitchen. Fire, Police, etc conducted their investigations. A week later, AllState conducted their investigation.

Sketches were drawn. Restoration companies were contacted and conducted walkthroughs. Estimates were developed and submitted (even if it took 5 weeks without a word from the adjuster). Allstate tried to rule out my spouse as an "insured" because an insured is either the homeowner or a resident relative, and her name is not on the deed.

Once all that was settled, it seemed appropriate they would forward us some method of payment for our ongoing, unforeseen out-of-pocket expenses. Most of which would not have occurred in normal circumstances.

This was not the case.

Today marks 8 weeks that Allstate has offered empty platitudes, excuses, and vague descriptions of the cause for their delay. My wife, two children, and I had been staying with friends who graciously offered us their hospitality so that we could stay in their home over the short term. This was short-lived, however, and was not a deal in any way involving Allstate other than that they were aware of it.

We are paying to live in a hotel as Allstate refuses to pay for us to live in a home temporarily, even after they have claimed they will pay to have our home rebuilt. No timetable has been set. In the meantime, we are burning through our savings, tax refund, fundraising money, and every resource available to us just to keep our kids from going hungry or homeless for one day. Allstate has not afforded us one penny for up-front expenses, rather suggesting we keep receipts for "reimbursement."

How much up-front capital does the average homeowner have lying around in the event of a catastrophe? $5,000? $50,000? $0?

Any of these would be their own sort of "insurance policy." But that, is what they call "purpose defeating." We would not pay insurance premiums to Allstate if we believed for a second that the only time in our lives we ever attempted to utilize our homeowners insurance, they would refuse to move an inch over a 2 month span, causing us to become destitute and left uncertain of where we will sleep next week.

In addition to filing a complaint with the Pennsylvania Department of Insurance and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, I am also actively making our case heard on social media @mdostaldrums on Twitter and #DostalFireFund as well as on Ripoff Report. Someone, whether the media, the press, a pro-bono attorney, someone has to protect us from the company that we thought would protect us from disaster who is, instead, causing this disaster to deal exponentially more damage to us.
