I was traveling thru small town Georgia and noticed that there was a political sign in front of a church.  With me being a atheist, I had to check this out.  In the yard of this church there is a sign that says, Teresa Strickland for City Council".

I thought wait a minute,  this is illegal to have a person running for a political office to have signs out on church grounds. In my talking with a couple of town members at the local supermarket, a person said that yes she is running for council and she is not a friendly person.  Was told that she "controls" the council and is racist.

It was also said that alot of people are getting ready to move out town because of the utility Bill's.  She will promise the world to you, but then do something totally different.  A guy told me that there has been  alot of crime in the town due to the fact they are running scared and the African Americans in the town do not want "white people" in the to council to help improve it.

Upon investigation, I found out she works for a Wal Mart.

I will call my folks at atheist.org to file a grievance  about this.

There must be no religion in politics!!!!

I thought wait a minute,  this is illegal to have a person running for a political office to have signs out on church grounds.  No, this is not illegal.  A church may allow signs like this to be posted on their property if they so wish.  Additionally, the posting of the sign would not violate the church's tax-exempt status either.  It is more than likely, the person you are referring to is a member of that church.

There must be no religion in politics!!!!  That's also incorrect.  Legally, the government cannot advocate for or against a specific religion.  However, court rulings (a) allowing the words In God We Trust on our currency, (b) the 10 commandments posted in court houses, and (c) Christian crosses posted on private property to be seen by all, represent examples of religion in our daily lives and our politics.  In reality, you have the statement backwards - there should be no politics in our religion.  That's what Jefferson meant when he coined the phrase way back when.  He intended there should be no politics in our religion, but that it was OK to have religion in our politics.  Understand?

Just traveling through?

The chances of you just traveling through this small town is about as likely as you being totally impartial in that election.

Where you just happen to be traveling and a single sign ticks you off so much that you start some personal vendetta(ummmm..."investigation") about that person around town?

Wouldn't it have been a bit more productive (expedient) to just go into the Church office and make them aware of the IRS regulations dealing with entities that have Non-Profit Status?

Atheism has nothing to do with this.  The IRS does have regulations about Political "Endorsements" and Non-Profit organizations such as churches.  But you could make the same case whether you are Atheist, Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, or Druid.

Perhaps the Church was unaware of the sign.  Perhaps the Church wasn't aware of the specific regulations.  Perhaps the Church does not restrict any person/party from posting signs where they would be considered more impartial and not taking a position.

With the few posts written recently by people claiming to be "Atheist", one thing is certain.  If you and the other posts represent the views of the majority of Atheist, then you are some of the most intolerant people I have ever seen.
