I'm not sure if this exactly falls under the category of a rip-off, but here is the story. I have been a Sear's credit card holder since 1976. I have all Sear's Kenmore appliances in my home and have been generally satisfied with them. Most of them were purchased with the Sear's credit card.

On July 24, 2000, I received a letter from Sear's stating that my Sear's credit card was being upgraded to a Sear's Mastercard. I called the 800 number in the letter and told them that I did not want a Mastercard and wanted to keep my original Sear's credit card account. I already have 9 Mastercard accounts, and do not want another one. In fact, I am in the process of closing several of the accounts that I do not use.

On August 7, 2000 I received the new Sear's Mastercard. I called the 800 number on the back of the card, and asked the representative to close the Sear's Mastercard account and reactivate my Sear's credit card account. The Mastercard account had a credit line $6,000 higher than the Sear's credit card. I told them that I did not find this helpful as having all of these unused open credit lines on my credit report actually reduces my credit score. If I apply for a loan on a car or other large purchase, this can actually count against you.

They closed the Sear's Mastercard account over the phone, but said that they cannot reactivate my Sears credit card. I told them that I was interested in a new Sear's Kenmore washer and dryer in the near future and wanted to use my Sear's credit card account. They still refused to allow me the use of my Sear's credit card account!

I always pay my credit accounts in full upon the receipt of the statement, and have a perfect payment record will all card issuers. I find it incredulous that Sear's would just boot me as a customer of 24 years. I know when I'm not wanted, and will buy the washer and dryer from a regular appliance dealer instead.

I noticed in the Sear's store, that they are still issuing new Sear's credit cards (not Mastercard). Why are these people picking on me?

The Sear's credit card is a retail charge account for use at Sear's only. A Mastercard is a bank card that can be used anywhere. How can they possibly send you a bank card in the mail without your authorization?
