My storage unit was burglarized while I was overseas due to negligence by Public Storage. I reported to the office that I couldn’t properly secure my unit due to their faulty latch and they never took care of it even though they said they would. The lights were also out in front of my unit upon move in.

When I contacted the office, they said they couldn't do anything about the lights at the time, so my professional movers had to move everything in the dark! I had to go overseas and while away, thousands of dollars worth of my things were stolen/damaged (along with 30 other units) due to a burglary. I am confident that my unit was targeted due to Public Storage's negligence.

When I returned from overseas, the office reps were very rude and lacked any empathy. Upon going through my remaining belongings, I found a large hole in my unit that was large enough to put my head and arms through to the unit next to mine and physically grab whatever I wanted out of there (which means they could do the same).

When I took pics/video of the hole, I noticed upon further inspection that a lot of MY belongings were in that unit next to mine. Looking at the structure surrounding the hole, I observed that they use very cheap material. It's basically a thick cardbord which any one can kick/punch to access the storage space next to theirs. No wonder my belongings fell through!

Public Storage refused to let me go in there to retrieve my belongings and told me they would contact me regarding how to move forward. They did not.   After a month of trying to get a hold of someone (calls, emails, leaving emails/voice messages to upper managemenet), nobody returned my calls/emails. I kept getting the runaround.

When I contacted the Public Storage office I rented from, they didn't care about the fact that my unit was burglarized or that my belongings were in another unit. All they wanted was the last month's rent (even though I moved out 5 days into the month, apparently they don't prorate and double dip) which I explained to them I would not be paying until I do a through check and get my belongings back from the unit next to mine.

I reported them to BBB and of course they wouldn't admit to their negligence and again, asked for the last month's rent ($128). They also raised the rent on me a month after my storage unit was broken into. All they care about is money. They have no empathy and run their business in bad faith and zero ethics.

When I moved out of my unit, they were 100% aware of the large hole in my unit which left the other unit (where my belongings were found) vulnerable to theft. All anyone needs to gain access is an elevator code, which is easy to obtain if you are standing behind someone or if you are a mover, etc. Anyone could have reached in there to grab whatever they wanted out of that unit.

I am moving overseas in a couple weeks and would have liked to do a through check for my belongings in the unit that was next to mine before I move. Public Storage is holding my possessions hostage...ILLEGAL! Public Storage only provides the space to put your belonings. If you want any type of security, you won't find in with Public Storage.

They don't maintain their facilities and use cheap materials which allows for easy break ins and accidents to occur. When these incidents do occur, they don't own up to them and instead try to get more money from you. They don't even contact you!

Due to their negligence, my storage unit was targeted and I lost thousands of dollars worth of my belongings, some that are irreplaceable. I've also lost valuable time sorting this out and have been emotionally distressed over this. This company needs to be shut down.
