M/I Schottenstein Homes Virginia Builder Rip-Off
Our complaint concerns M/I Schottenstein Homes who should win the "crook of the year" award. M/I duped us into buying a home of substandard construction, refused to even speak with us when the home had serious problems, and blatantly refused to honor the provisions of the home warranty.
During the first five years that we owned this $275,000 home, we spent over $20,000 repairing defective construction throughout the home and lot, M/I refused to address any of the problems.
Then, last summer our basement flooded causing and additional $ 15,000 in damages. We appealed to M/I Schottenstein for help since the foundation drain system had obviously failed, but we were rebuffed at every attempt. Phone calls were never returned, no one but the receptionist would speak to us, and they refused to release the Engineer's report.
Finally we received a letter stating that M/I Homes would not accept responsibility for the drain system (even though they installed it) or honor the home warranty. In fact, they claim no liability for the home that they built or the warranty.
We then hired a contractor, at our expense, and found that the line had been thrown together with pieces of what appeared to be leftover piping construction pieces without proper joints and had pulled apart, broken, or collapsed. Even the sewer piping had the same problem. When we opened the trench the sewer clean-out standpipe simple fell over and collapsed. The PVC piping had never been glued and sealed, which was another problem just waiting to happen.
What is most unfortunate is that M/I Schottenstein Homes continues to act as a fly-by-night firm; duping other innocent consumers, building other homes of defective construction and issuing fake home warranties.
Our complaints to local consumer protection agencies have produced no results. So, hopefully this web site can serve to inform other unsuspecting consumers to avoid this inept dishonest builder.
