I've been in the construction business all of my life. From laborer, to carpenter, to estimator, to project manager and now V.P. of construction management services. The term "sub" in the word sub-contractor is just what it says. They are under the contractor, or in this case, under Home Depot. In my opinion, Home Depot is still responsible for anyone that they use for the installation of their products, if you are paying Home Depot for the installation. Companies that sell consumers goods and services, including financing, often sub-contract out the services, including the financing. In my opinion, the company that is sub-contracting the services is still responsible, no matter how hard they try to pass on the blame. Many stores that have products specifically branded for their stores will also pass off defective material complaints to the vendor who actually makes the product for them. Maybe the company I work for is old fashioned, but we feel that our sub-contractors are much like employees. We are responsible for their actions, both good and bad. That's why we do our best to find reputable sub-contractors. It's a matter of reputation and on the practical side, it's usually a lot less aggravating. Unfortunately, many companies don't. Many companies are more interested in how much they can make by using the cheapest sub-contractor or vendor. I've had my share of negative experiences with such companies as Service Merchandise (now out of business) and Home Depot. Patience, perseverence, written communication, keeping written documentation and a call to your state attorney division of consumer affairs almost always pays off.

To Whom it may Concern, (or may help) I read the comments on the page and realized 1 thing that stuck out. They had "installer's". I have a cousin that worked for a Home Depot in my state as a garage door installer. The point is that these installer's are usually sub-contractors, using thier own equip. They are usually never actually employed by the company you order from. The best advice I can give to people in your situation is to make sure they install it. If they do then your grief with the company must be handled by the company. Get it in writing if you can. Usually they will beacuse they need your money to stay in buisness. If they don't, well then they do not need your money, now do they?

This email is a rebuttal to RipOff #3950. It was sent by Chris at [email protected] Home Depot Grand Rapids Michigan workers completly ruined my home a real rip off job (#3950) They filed the following rebuttal to the above Rip-Off Report: Their email: [email protected] Their name: Chris Their relationship to the company: Consumer Suggestion Consumer Suggestion: Your saga is similar to mine. It was THREE WEEKS before somebody could call me to make an appointment to measure my floors!!! I laughed because I thought he was kidding. Sadly he wasn't. So five weeks after choosing my carpet, I had a day off work and waited all day while nobody showed up to measure. I went down to Home Depot and physically pulled the manager of that department from behind the desk and he came over to measure it then and there. Then, weeks and weeks later, the carpeters showed up. Keep in mind this is about 600 sq ft, 3 rooms, no furniture (hadn't moved in yet), totally stripped to the clean hardwood. It took them the entire day to do it. When they were finished, they used MY shop-vac to clean it up, clogged it, and left. But not before I made them fix huge ripples, trim a horrible seam, and remove four spots of their tacky-strip glue from the middle of the room. And there were nails and wads of junk all over the place and the ripples and poor seams are still there - I just wanted them out of my house. Same as you, I had no leverage because I had to pay upfront due to the "Home Depot" card I used to get 10% off the carpet. Sad to say it wasn't worth the 10%! The store told me it wasn't their problem - it was the installers. I get furious at that...I did NOT hand my money over to the installers - it went to HOME DEPOT and they are responsible for ensuring a quality job!
