This would be the dumbest associate manager in Walmart history if he let you try to break THEIR laptop screen to prove a point.   Sorry for the skepticism, but that's just me.

I don't know that particular computer but I know that most laptops can be connected to an external display.  This is common because many people use laptops for presentations and they need to be able to connect to a projector or large screen monitor. I connect my old IBM laptop to a larger standalone flatscreen monitor because it's larger and brighter.

Maybe not what you want but at least you could see your daughter and actually bigger and brighter than the original display. That's a good thing.

If yours has VGA, DVI or HDMI ports you could probably do it.

The guy was actually trying to break the display at WalMart. Here's his quote...

I suspect. also, any claim against HP will fail as almost no computer mf'r covers broken displays unless done under extended breakage replacement warranty, which is expensive. The displays ARE subject to breakage if flexed under pressure.  I'm very careful with my Dell 17" laptop. It's almost 3 years old now and everything works like new.

Nice catch on the computer the OP used to post his ROR, Robert...you are, of course, right.

I didn't even mention anything about the "warranty" issue because the OP's other claims seemed a bit "dramatic".

It is well known that people on this site always seem to want to embellish their report to gain sympathy.  To that end the OP stated that they can no longer talk to their daughter in Kandahar.  So of course the obvious question is..how are they posting this on the Internet if they don't have a computer?

If that "stress test" was nothing more than raising and lowering the lid to see if the screen would break just from that, I don't see that as being so off the cliff edge.
-  Of course if they just opened and lowered there is nothing wrong with that, and they wouldn't even need the approval of anyone.  But that is not what the OP stated, they stated they could not break it no matter how hard they pushed.  There is a difference between opening and closing and pushing as hard as they can.

However as to the warranty, we don't even know the specifics.  Date of Purchase, was it new or used($298 is pretty cheap).  Was it truly in warranty still or was this another person who things that they are a special case and the warranty should be extended?  For all we know them "pushing it as hard as they could" is what damaged it in the first place? 

I don't understand the reason for piling on this poster so vehemently.

I assumed that whatever the poster tried in Walmart was with the cooperation of whoever manned the department at the time (Granted I'm sure that employee or manager was hard pressed to hide a knowing smirk or eye roll). Lacking further details I don't see any reason to assume this poster did anything more stressful to that laptop than simply lowering the screen angle, as any laptop ought to allow for.

And from all I've read online for years now, I have no doubt that most consumer level laptops, not just HP's, are basically made like crappola today.

To the poster, don't just lay down and die. If need be, try to take HP to small claims for not honoring the warranty. Hopefully they have some kind of office presence within a reasonable distance from your home that would enable you to use small claims.

- And exactly what would you have done if you broke the screen at Walmart?   Because you were doing it intentionally, so if they probably could have had you arrested for vandalism or similar charge.

You can ALWAYS crack a laptop screen if the screen/lid is skewed and the display stressed.

What has this to do with HP not fixing your computer for free.  I don't know any mfr. that will replace a broken display under warranty unless it is additional accidental damage coverage you buy extra.
See if you can plug a standard monitor into your laptop...most allow this.

BTW, in all your brilliance, what did you intend to do at Walmart if YOU broke THEIR screen?
I'll bet you'd have just said nothing, left and used that to harangue HP about how easy it is to break a screen.  You're priceless.
