Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

Habitat for Humanity international CANNOT and WILL NOT do anything about their local affiliates.

I have seen this first hand. AS A MANAGER FOR THEIR RESTORE! The way they are structured as to protect Habitat for Humanity international and the personal interest of the local boards of director’s period.

Local Affiliates are their own beast. And The Beast favors relatives, friends, personal interests, and nepotistic relations.

The De-centralized nature of the organization gives plausible deniability to the parent company. For all the world wide good the company does there are many several hundred, if not thousands, of local failures and foreclosures in every state.

An internet research will prove this. Log onto my.habitat.org and sign up using your local affiliate name and whatever email you have. Access the forums and boards. See the struggles the executive directors, managers, employees, and volunteers face day to day and the challenges the company has.

Challenge the local boards with the sunshine law (co) or similar in your state (non profit accountability laws). See yourself shot down and vilified for your questioning.

I was fired from being a manager for one of their ReStores. On FALSE charges. I tried to get our state organization involved. I'll send it up I was told. NO REPLY!

It doesn't matter that at in my annual review board members Leonard Andrews and Phil Reinpold, both of pueblo, CO, gave me high marks on the copy of the Annual review I SIGNED. Then a month latter board member Sharron Gaskel of Pueblo, CO was telling us employees that she just hopped we would still be in a job by the end of the year and that the organization was failing.

3 weeks latter I was fired on false charges they cannot and would not back up.

Other local and state organizations can back up my conduct as exemplary and I have lined them up if they are needed in court.

DO NOT TRUST THIS ORGANIZATION!!!!

THEY WILL f**k YOU OVER!!!!

I too worked at the Pueblo Co Habitat for Humanity as the Executive Director.  I was hired with the grand illusions and stories, unfortunately the stories were lies.

First issue, as Executive Director, I was not allowed to replace the bookkeeper who was in the pocket of specific board members.

Issue two, a comment was made by two board members who wanted to get a Habitat loan refinanced because their personal names were on the loan.

The bank would not give me information on the loan so I could advise the board appropriately.  When asked about the loan they became very defensive.

Board members resigned...unfortunately the WRONG board members.  I investigated the issue which was very suspicious.  The loan was not on the legal books.

I turned my findings over to the board members.  Another board member resigned.  This left 4 board members, of which 2-3 were involved.

I negotiated my exit from the company and left after only 6 month of employment.  This was at great expense to me because I changed residency from one state to another at the board’s encouragement.

I later learned that the last remaining good board member resigned and the bookkeeper was made the executive director.

Besides the personal loan, the mortgages set up by the Pueblo board to the Habitat homeowners were questionable and the accountant is one of the questionable board member’s brother!

I cannot suggest anyone get involved with this affiliate as a homeowner, donor or board member…unless the previous board members are removed.

This one affiliate does not make Habitat for Humanity bad.  The ideals of Habitat are commendable, the mission honorable and the goal of creating affordable housing for everyone wonderful.  It can be done, but this affiliate does not do it correctly.
