In October 2007, I contacted CreditReport.com for a one-time credit report on behalf of a woman I was thinking of renting an apartment from. I had no idea that I was going to be charged every month for 3 and 1/2 years! This is the second time in the last 6 months that my bank account has been overdrawn and I did not know why. Today (3-27-2011) I was going over my bank statement and found a $19.95 withdrawal by CreditReport.com. I called the company to find out why I had been charged. That is when I learned that I have been charged every single month since September 2007 for a credit check I knew nothing about. The customer service representative had an email address listed for me that has never belonged to me. When I gave her my correct email address, she updated it in the system, completely wiping out the old email address she had so there is no way I can prove that I have been charged month after month, year after year without my knowledge. I never received one receipt or letter from CreditCheck.com. I am a single mother with two disabled children and no job, and now I find out that CreditReport.com has been feeding off my meager bank account like a blood sucking leach. Please help me!

Do you know how to reconcile your bank statements?

#2Consumer Suggestion

Sun, March 27, 2011

You have no one to blame but youself. I know this is harsh, but you are the one that is responsible for reconciling your bank statements each and every month.  You had an ongoing monthly debit from a CRA for YEARS and you never noticed!

You signed up for credit monitoring when the website offered a credit report.  Yes, it is slimy of the CRA to have duped you into getting monitoring. But you should have noticed it the following month when an additional debit hit your account. The fact that you missed an extra debit on your bank statements for 42 months in a row speaks volumes about how careless you are with your responsibilties and your finances.

There is no excuse now for not knowing the status of your account with the internet and bank access 24 hrs/day.  If you don't know how to reconcile your statements, google it.  In fact, the less money you have, the more you need to be on top of your finances. You can not afford to ignore your bank records.

By the way, once you take control of your own finances (and responsibility) you will feel empowered. Don't let anyone just access your bank account - it is a sure way to go broke and stay there.
