Bought a $1500.00 87 Mercury Cougar,From Burgetts,Drove it for a week and did a tune up including an oil change, found out it had a major oil leak. Called the man to find out where it was leaking from and of course he had no idea it had an oil leak. We've did everything we could to stop this oil leak. Once we think we got it something else is wrong. Needless to say I got 3 weeks of driving out of it and it has sat for 7 months now! I have not been in any more contact with this man because I didn't know what I could do! I cannot sell this car and get any portion of the money I have put into it. What can I do?

I AM THE DAUGHTER OF BURGETT'S TOWING, MY DAD HAS DONE TOWING FOR SOME TIME NOW AND HE IS A HARD WORKER, VERY HONEST, CARING AND WOULD NEVER RIP NO ONE OFF. THAT IS A FACT. HE DOES TOWING AND WORKS ON VEHICLES, WHEN HE IS ABLE TO SELL A VEHICLE HE DOES. HE DOES NOT ALWAYS KNOW IF SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH THE VEHICLE, YOU ARE THE ONE TO CHECK IT OUT BEFORE YOU BUY IT, AS YOU WOULD WITH ANYTHING BEFOE YOU BUY ANYTHING. ESPECIALLY A USED VEHICLE, ONCE YOU BUY IT IS YOURS TO TAKE CARE OF. I AM SURE OF IT HE DID NOT KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH THE CAR AND IT WAS AN '87'. YOU WERE WRONG TO FILE A RIP OFF REPORT AGAINST HIM. YOU CAN FIX YOUR VEHICLE TOO AND NOT JUST LET IT SIT THERE FOR MONTHS. MY DAD WORKS FOR THE POLICE AND HE GETS THERE CALLS AND HE IS THERE IN MINUTES..YOU CAN COUNT ON HIM TO HELP ANYONE ANYTIME. I SAY THIS IS UNFAIR OF YOU ALSO. THANKS

Abandoned tow vehicles are a great business for someone who enjoys that kind of work.

I did this for years, so I'm not talking out my a*s here. First, why are the cars towed away? They're not all junk. Just the opposite. In many states, if you are DUI or no license, your vehicle is automatically towed and impounded for a minimum of 30 days. You pay storage and towing to get it back. You're talking $700 minimum. It may be more now. You just got out of jail for DUI. Do you have $700? The majority of these cars were running when they were confiscated. Many come with keys. If not, I can smoke and impression a key from a blank in 30 minutes. I also know how to use key codes and make keys. You can hook up with a local locksmith to do this for you. The tow company holds regular auctions. Every Wednesday. Saturday. In a big city, you attend 10 auctions a month. Pick the cream, not the trash. They start the cars. Move it forward a foot. And, back. You bid fast. There's 200 cars to sell. They ain't got all day to fool around. Start at $200. Go to $400. Unless it's clearly worth more. This ain't ebay and a three day auction. Start, move, bid and sale, all in 90 seconds. You're looking at $500 profit for each car. And, you're not a finance company. These are all cash deals. So, keep your sale price around $1000. Definitely under $1500. Who's your buyer? New in town. No credit. Bad credit. Or, just wants a cheap car. Kids. Adults. They come from all walks of life. Here's your money. Detail work. You make your money by vacuuming out the whole inside, meticulously. I remove the front seats. Takes me 10 minutes a side. Shop vac. Carpet brush. Armor-all the vinyl. Spotless glass, inside and out. You always tuck a little tree air freshener up under the dash. Open the bag all the way. The smell will fill the whole car. But, you never see the tree. Outside, buffer. Actually, buffer/grinder. Big, fuzzy wool pad. Professional wax, not auto parts store wax. I used 3M products. Buy by the gallon. Compound. Wax. Then, glaze. No compound on clear/base finishes. My s**t looked better than new sometimes. Mechanically, fix what you can. I got good. I've been out of the business for years, so I'd have to learn fuel-injection for all the new stuff. If you can't fix anything, buy start and run only. Not hard. Remember, a drunk was driving this when he got stopped. Customers come over. Mine is cleaner and nicer than the rest. Smells nice too. Yeah, that's worth $1000. Ok, I'll go $950. Tell your customer what you did. I bought this in an auction. I looked it over, and it doesn't seem too bad. Figure that you're buying 6 months of use for $1000. Not a bad deal, really. Buy a car hauler. Do 30 a month. Times $500 net profit. Fifteen thousand. This works in all major cities.

Towed away cars...

#7Consumer Suggestion

A car that has been towed away and not reclaimed is a risky purchase. There will of course be cases where the owner simply couldn't come up with the money to reclaim it. But the vast majority of these cars were abandoned because they have a major problem. That's not to say you can't get a good deal, but you do need to buy cheap and expect to make repairs. The amount you paid is way too much for that particular car, even if it were in good condition. Of course you can sell it, but not for $1500.00. I'm not sure why an oil leak can't be found, or why a car with an oil leak can't be driven. Some leaks are not expensive to repair. If the one you have would be expensive, buy the cheapest oil you can find and keep replacing that which leaks out. Having to do that is still a lot better than having no car.

Buying a used car? If you're not a mechanic, take one with you. Even then, buy it cheap, and expect to spend money on it.

I had a small car business and I couldn't even tell you everything that's wrong with a car just by looking and driving it. Here's how you find the leak. Blast the engine clean at the car wash. Now run the engine. You may need to use a hand mirror to see behind stuff. If you still can't spot it, there's a fluorescent additive you put in the oil. You run the engine, and then use a black light pen. The leak will stand out bright. Search google uv leak detection

I have been very happy with my purchase

when ever you buy a used car you expect to find certain problems. buying a car from any tow company you have to know most cars are impounds and they dont know exactly what is wrong with them. I have purchased several cars from Burgett's Towing and I have been very happy with my purchase, but i went into the venture with an open mind. meaning I Bought a USED car. I think you are being very unfair with Mr Burgett.
