A shill or plant is a person who helps another person or organization to sell goods or services without disclosing that he or she has a close relationship with the seller. The shill pretends to have no association with the seller/group and gives onlookers the impression that he or she is an enthusiastic independent customer. The person or group that hires the shill is using crowd psychology, to encourage other onlookers or audience members (who are unaware of the set-up) to purchase the said goods or services. Shills are often employed by confidence artists. The term is also used to describe a person who is paid to help a political party or other advocacy organization to gain adherents; as with the situation of selling goods or services, the shill gives the impression of being unrelated to the group in question, and gives the impression that he or she finds merit in the ideological claims of the political party.
Shilling is illegal in many circumstances and in many jurisdictions[1] because of the frequently fraudulent and damaging character of the shill's actions. However, if a shill does not place uninformed parties at a risk of loss, but merely generates "buzz", the shill's actions may be legal. For example, a person planted in an audience to laugh and applaud when desired (see claque), or to participate in on-stage activities as a "random member of the audience", is a type of legal shill.
"Shill" can also be used pejoratively to describe a critic who appears either all-too-eager to heap glowing praise upon mediocre offerings, or who acts as an apologist for glaring flaws. In this sense, they would be an implicit "shill" for the industry at large, possibly because their income is tied to its prosperity. The origin of the term shill is uncertain; it may be an abbreviation of the Yiddish shillaber. The word originally denoted a carnival worker who pretended to be a member of the audience in an attempt to elicit interest in an attraction. Some sources trace the usage only back to 1914

Just wanted to make you aware that those who are posting all the negative comments are just the penny-shills of this site.
I wonder how many words these shills have posted over this $1.50 issue??? How much are THEIR principles worth???
Once again if you'(re) right your right! And IF your wrong, who cares! DEMAND your free ice cream!
I would venture to say that these who are damning you over this ice cream incident would have NO PROBLEM telling you to cheat on your taxes.
Just my observations!
Good Day!

You posted a nearly 800 word paper over a $1.50 ice cream that your kid took several spoonfuls from? It seems that you have wasted far more than $1.50 in productivity. Oh, I know..it is the principle. If that is the case then your principles must not be worth very much.
You sampled the flavor. Then you asked for that flavor. You got exactly what you paid for. Exactly how many spoonfuls do you need to decide whether or not you like the flavor? As others have said, you missed out on an opportunity to teach your kids a lesson.
By the way, recommending Dairy Queen ice cream which is pumped full of air is not particularly bright.

"You can do this multiple times if your good."
"Your a SHILL."
"Shills need better reading skills, I've noticed."
Oh yeah rik? How about writing skills? Learn the difference between your and you're. You should consider contributing something more than recommendations of theft and vandalism to this site.

The difference is that Karl is paranoid and delusional; rik is a troublemaker and a goofball.

To the OP: I agree with the previous poster who said, in effect, that you lost a valuable opportunity to teach your kids a lesson about decision making. You were wrong, and I applaud BR for standing up.
To the regular readers.... looks like Mr. Rik is now competing with Charles and Karl for most idiotic posts. What rock did he crawl out from under?

The Baskin Robbins staff was absolutely correct.
Just common sense, and basic business.
If your son decided that he didn't like what he ordered, that is a total different situation than if something was actually wrong with the product.
Grow up.
We are talking about $1.50 here!
No rip off.
You got exactly what you ordered.
You had the opportunity for the free sample of that product.
Retail profits in foodservice are down right now due to higher costs like fuel.
It raises the prices of everything, and lowers profits.
I can guarantee that business did not pass along it's actual cost hikes to the customer.
Just common sense here.
Grow up.

Let me guess....you voted for Obama. Where does this mentality come from that you think because you have been going to a particular store for awhile that they OWE you something? Because little Johnny didn't like his ice cream you EXPECT the store to dole it out for free? You sure went to a lot of trouble to track down the lady who owns this store, which that right there makes you come across as some kind of loon and teaching your kids that if they don't like something the store should give you something else in return for free is NOT the way to do it. I think the remark you made about "At this stage we're not sure what Baskin-Robbins may do to erase the impression they made on our kids." is simply beyond ignorant. Good God. Its really unfortunate that you have no common sense nor any business sense. The best thing Baskin-Robbins can do is bar you from coming into any stores. I feel bad for your kids. Thumbs up to Darlene Parrish. Lady, you have issues.

Of course one of my favorite gags to play on these kiddies (If I do order anything) is to order like a triple decker or something. Then when they try to hand it over make sure they drop it on the floor. Then yell BUTTERFINGERS!
You can do this multiple times if your good. Then you get to watch the cleanup!
Or you can take your doggie and he will get FREE ice cream!

Now is the time to teach your child a valuable lesson in decision making. Sometimes the choices we make aren't always the ones that work out the best and we have to live with them. Same goes for the "ice cream incident". Your kid tasted it, wanted it, ordered it, and decided it wasn't for him. At a restaurant if he did this you would just tell him don't order it the next time because they definitely won't give another meal for free.
I agree with the owner that in this economy nothing is going to be for free or given away. Bottom line "put your big girl panties on and grow up".

We drove out of our way to go to the Anthem Baskin-Robbins. advise you all to stay away from this ice cream store if you appreciate good ice cream
You drove out of your way for the ice cream (because it is good) but then you advise others to stay away if they appreciate good ice cream. If you were to recommend others stay away because you disagree with their policies that certainly is ok but you appear to be a liar because you implied that it was because the ice cream is not good.
Dairy Queen stores are nasty and dirty. Baskin-Robbins stores are much cleaner and serve a far better quality product.

I can't believe you even had guts enough to ask for free ice cream. You said it's the principal of the thing. I agree with the store that it's not the price, it's the principal, they don't provide free products.
Your statement that she probably gives free scoops to family and friends is unproven and irrelevant.
Sounds like a good store to me and I wouldn't go to Diary Queen anyway. At least Baskin Robbins has real ice cream.
