My car was broken into on vacation once a while back. (They missed a $10 bill lying on the front seat! I doubt they got more than that for the sunglasses and CDs they stole.) It took all of about 10 minutes to file a police report. In my case, I'm assuming it didn't take long because they didn't plan on investigating or prosecuting. Without catching the meth addict in the act, there is rarely any hope of justice. Not unless they happen to steal something that is somehow identifiable. My prejudices tell me that most major urban police departments would also largely ignore a car break-in report. Other than to give out a report number so insurance can be notified, it's almost a drive-thru service. So instead of being about Avis, this report should be a message to people to report a crime sooner rather than later.

I don't understand how this is a rip off. They didn't double charge you or do any of the other things that I have read about on this board. You have their $20K to 30K car in your possession that has been broken into. Why in the world would they provide you with another car without a police report? To me, that is something that needed to be taken care of right then and there. Not put your meeting as a priority. Whomever you were meeting with would have understood. Ginger
