This report concerns an Allied Van Lines agent by the name of Astro Moving & Storage, located in St. James, NY. Sadly, the business is essentially a criminal enterprise. A family member hired them to help my elderly aunt and uncle move, without reading the many reviews out there on the internet that describe exactly what they do...and what they did to us. Firstly, the bill came out to almost twice the estimate. (Almost all of the difference was accounted for by inflated labor charges, which included straightforward fraud as well as hourly totals that were inflated by a crew that worked at a glacial pace and literally stretched a few hours of work into a 12-hour day.) Second, they put our items in storage for a brief period of time, and a number of boxes turned up missing when it came time for delivery. Surprise, surprise, these were far and away the most valuable boxes in the move, with items that were very valuable and very difficult to replace, insurance or not. Go check out other review sites and you'll see that this is their M.O. - Charge you double the estimate while they steal your stuff.
Since the move took place, the company has been almost completely unresponsive with respect to complaints about both the overbilling and the missing items. At a minimum, they are supposed to send out insurance claim forms so my aunt and uncle can sublmit a claim for the things that were stolen. The move took place months ago, and so far no forms.
This business is owned by a family by the name of Verderber. Two twin brothers, Joe and John, appear to be the main criminals behind the operation. I believe they operate other moving-related businesses, so beware if you cross paths with anyone with that name. These are scumbags who belong in jail, period.
