Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

I called America Online (AOL) to cancel their email service for my mother, who died. I also disputed their charges via CapitalOne's online dispute function. Now, these bloodsuckers send me a "collection letter" for $31.96, for 4 months of "past due" fees that they kept charging my dead mother after I canceled and stopped paying them.

AOL has been doing this for 20 years. To sign up for an AOL account originally, you waited in a telephone queue for 15 seconds; but if you wanted to cancel, you waited for over 20 minutes.

AOL is a scam machine that largely preys upon old people who do not know how to change their email provider, and also do not have the Internet savvy to navigate through AOL's layer's of communications to cancel the service.

Their third tier of telephone obstruction told me that I was "not secured on this account," and that she "could not discuss it with" me. I said, "Fine, I'll talk and you listen": I explained that I am a lawyer in Louisiana, and that I would sue them for defamation and for violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act if I heard about this again. This would make a good class action.

Their "collection department" is 800-877-3913.
