This reply is to serve as a middleground between the 2 prior messages. Yes, the 809 area code is used by many scammers, and yes, there are legitimate businesses in the 809 area code. My suggestion is this: If you get an unsolicited message/email/fax saying to call or fax a 809 number, don't do it. If you are contacting someone that you know is a legitimate business or individual, then you don't necessarily need to be concerned.

This 809 scam has become nothing more than an urban legend. After having lived in the U.S. Virgin Islands for over 8 years, I can tell you that 809 is a legitimate area code for the British Virgin Islands. The U.S. Virgin Islands changed it's area code to 340 because of this urban legend. Please stop spreading this nonsense on the Internet as 809 is real people's and businesses area code. How would you like it if I told everyone your area code was a scammers area code? Hello? I'm sure you have scammers in your personal area code too. But it would be silly to advertise that fact now wouldn't it?
