US Postal Service Instructs Employees To Gouge Customers New customer service scripts require postal employees to offer most expensive shipping options first. Washington DC Washington DC
I went to the post office to mail a package this past Saturday. It was a little larger than a shoe box. The postal worker told me "We can send it Express for $27. I looked at her and she then looked very uncomfortable and she asked me if I was a "secret shopper" - you know, one of those people that come in pretending to be a customer and seeing if they are performing their job according to the script. I laughed and said no. Then she and the postal employee next to her told me that they were required from senior USPS management that they HAD to offer the most expensive option first and could only offer a cheaper option if the customer asks. This is a national directive. They said that if they told me this and I was a secret shopper they would be in trouble. It was clear that they did not agree with this attempt to deceive their customers with this gouging scheme. I was flabbergasted! This is our government telling its employees to do this! In these economic times?
In this time of the holiday season, can you imagine how many people might be deceived? I think it is terrible that in these economic times, the US government is actively requiring its employees to intentionally gouge the public.
So how much did it cost me in the end? $5.
Please pass this to as many people as you can so that we can try to prevent this from being a very expensive holiday season.
