I visited the True Value in Van Alstyne, TX to purchase Ice Melt to help out several clients that asked me to help out with the snow and ice blizzard that we had in Dallas in the week of February 14-19, 2021 . As I was helping out several clients, I realized that I ordered way too much product and didn't use all the bags. At this point I put an ad on Facebook Marketplace to see if I could sell the remaining bags which I was not successful on my endeavor.

I decided to take the rest of the product back 2/18/21. I live about an hour away from the True Value in Van AIstyne, TX and when I got there, I was told from a female owner that they could not take the return. She stated the other male owner Gerald Strother would be here shortly and wait and speak to him.

When he showed up, he had 2 other guys with him and proceeded to block me in the parking lot with trucks, preventing me to leave and not explaining his actions. At that moment I feared what was going to happen next. Being a female and having 3 guys surrounding me it startled me. I didn't know what was going to happen next and didn't know if they were there trying to bully me and intimate me? Either way, it is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.

When I asked Gerald to return the items I purchased, he flat said "NO!!". I asked about your return policy? He said "It doesn't matter! I am not taking the product back!"...angrily!

In my opinion, this was unacceptable behavior! The owner went to great lengths to find me on one of my social media accounts and I assume he got my name off the purchase ticket. Gerald and his wife started harassing me on my Facebook messenger account. I have the messages that would be willing to provide.

This is UNACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR.. I was born and raised in Chicago. True Value is a Chicago based company and have always shopped there since I was a kid and all of my family.

After this incident I called Customer service at True Value to report the Owner Gerald Strother and his store in Van Alstyne, TX . The rep I spoke to was Nina and she apologized and said the district manager for that region would be contacting me. Needless to say it has been over a month and no one has contacted to me on this matter, which is a very unacceptable situation. How disappointing and unprofessional of a company as big as True Value! I am asking for a full refund on all of the product and depending on how this is handled through corporate, I will have to see if I ever shop or refer anyone to True Value again.

Since I did report this to Corporate and haven't heard anything back, I will be posting on various social media sites and the BBB, along with filing a complaint with the Texas Attorney General's office.

Sincerely,

TJ

Based on your timeline you bought this product 3 days before the blizzard hit. Unless you own a business where this would be normal, it is odd that you would have your clients out of the blue ask you go to out and handle this for them. But if this is something you would normally do, then you would also likely just keep the material for the next event.

I would bet that you don't normally go onto FB to sell an item before you decide to return it to a store. So why now? Simple..you bought this product figuring you could make a few dollars. But one thing isn't clear. Just how much did you buy originally and how much did you try to return?

Your narrative about being "surrounded" is also sketchy. Again, not to justify what they may or may not have done. But you are basically saying that you were such a threat that they had to call the Male Owner to come to the store with 2 additional people and physically block your car in so you can't leave. Unless you want us to believe that they do this every time someone tries to make a return, you are leaving out details that make your return unique. You also didn't exactly say how this interaction ended. They obviously moved their trucks and you left, so how did this end?

But if you truly did fear for your property or safety, why didn't you report this to the police? Or if you did what did they say?

Oh and NO I have nothing to do with this or any other Hardware or Retail store.

Caught with what? You are wrong in what you wrote, but thats your opinion. Doesn't account for 3 guys blocking me and standing over me in the parking lot and not allowing me to leave. Also I hope you are not affiliated with the store or the people that work there as this message will be forward to corporate for harrassment once again.

Do you really think anyone believes your "I bought too much" story?

People that buy too much don't go looking to sell on FB and when it doesn't sell try to return it to the store.  However, people that are trying to take advantage will do exactly what you did.

The owners didn't just decide to pick on you because you were the 100th person in the store that day.  There is obviously some history here that you are failing to mention.  Perhaps this isn't the first time you have tried to return something after you couldn't sell it.  But with that said, I am not here to justify their behavior, but you are posting here like you are some innocent victim, which you obviously are NOT.

You sound no different than the "Hoarders" and other people that try to take advantage of situations. Such as the people buying cases of toilet paper and selling it for $5/roll when COVID started. The only difference with you is that you likely didn't try to sell it for an amount that would have put you in "price gouging" territory which is good. Because if you did, as soon as you reported this to the AG they would have turned around and arrested you once they say your post.

So sorry..there is really no sympathy for you...
