I believe that the OP is referring to the practice of reducing portion sizes as a cost cutting measure. For example, Burger King used to use 2.2 ounce beef patties on their Whopper JR sandwich but have switched to two ounce patties. When I was 16 I worked at a restaurant and we noticed how the cheese slices got smaller.
I assume that the OP ordered a taco salad and it was noticably smaller than what he or she was used to.
