Tuesday, September 14, 2004 me and my soon to be wife go to Robinson's May to apply for jobs. We were attracted first by their decrepid old giant banner they have, hanging from their roof. We pick up some applicatioins, unfortunatley after 4:00pm all the executives go home after a long hard days work. So we fill these applications out at home, along with all of our other applications we have. We arrive at Robinsons May at the Westminster Mall, bright and early Wednesday, September 15, 2004, eager to turn in our applications.

We were given "interviews" that same hour. Actually we had to wait until one of the executives was done chatting on his company phone. However that didn't say anything, we were just glad to finally have an "interview". Finally the executive gets off his phone and calls my fiances name off the list. She gets up and follows him down a hall. I wait another 5 or so minutes for my "interview". Finally I am called I go into this office that has just a desk, two chairs and a fake plant.

The interviewer has a piece of paper on it that he marked on once during the interview. He asked me 1 question during the whole interview. I told him my qualifications. Some of my previous background information. I had worked at a hotel as a Front Desk Clerk, Best Buy as a Media Representative, Savon Drugs as a Retail Clerk, all of which involved stocking, cashiering and customer service.

After this brief period, he asks me to "Hold on a second." He exits the room for a couple of minutes. He comes back, then askes me "What type of position were you looking for?" I replied, thinking everything in the whole store is customer service oriented in some way,"Something involved in customer service" He then goes on to tell me there will be might be some positions opening up. He told me to keep in mind, they would only be seasonal positions.

So I shake his hand, and proceed out to wait for my fiance. She comes out shortly after my interview is over. She begins to inform me that she was offered a full-time position in stocking, and that she could transfer to customer service if she was not satisfied with that position. My Fiance told her interviewer that she had attend the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) and prior to that she has worked for Dog Kennels, and a Food Concession stand. She says " It seemed after I told him I attended (FIDM) nothing else seemed to register.

Later we come to realize that 90% of all employees at Robinsons May are Female. Maybe it was because I was male or maybe because I didn't go to a certain school. Its just very disappointing that even though I possessed all the skills necessary to properly fill the position, I was, and probably even before the interview took place, turned down. They call it a "Screening Process" I call it Discrimination!
