This is a list of all troubles experienced with three different pep boys locations.

1. Pep Boys 1300 N Expressway, Griffin, GA, 30223

My 1985 Jeep J10 blew a head gasket on my way to purchase a new vehicle. I looked online for repair shops nearby and pep boys came up as the closest location. I called and asked if they could replace my head gasket and possibly replace my engine. I was told that they would have no problem performing either task. I dropped it off at the shop around 02/23/2016, the day I ordered a rebuilt Jasper inline 6 motor for $2500.00.  It took them about a week and a half to install the first engine, which is alright. The problems starts where I consistantly had to call them to figure out the progress on my truck, and I was consistantly told they were further ahead than they actually were. I was given 4 completion dates, and each day I drove the hour and a half to pick it up when I arrived I was told my truck would not be fixed that day. They were struggling with oil leaks from the valve cover adn several other places. They finally managed to stop the leaks temporarily and quickly called me in to pick up the truck. I picked it up on 02/20/2016 and payed $2152.64 in labor and for some parts. I was told all leaks were stopped and the vehicle was just fine. I drove the truck for about 4 days when I realized the valve cover and motor were spewing oil. Amazed that I was having these troubles only 4 days after installation, I took it to a pep boys nearby my job to get it looked at. I dropped the truck off at the pep boys located at 1008 Whitlock Avenue. They were quickly able to diagnose the engine had bad backpressure issues. This location then sent the engine back to Jasper and had a new one sent to them. The previous pep boys had stemmed the flow of oil temporarily and knowingly tried to place the blame on me for the leak, blaming it on the bad valve cover. Sure enough, the engine test showed backpressure issues. They then rushed to place the blame on Jasper, whos fault it actually was. The problem is they sent me home knowing the truck wasnt fixed and with a plan to prevent me from getting my vehicle fixed. I went to talk to them with my supervisors and they immediately noticed that I had payed for an air filter that had not been actually replaced. How am I supposed to trust them to fix my vehicle when they can't replace an air filter.

2. Pep Boys 1008 Whitlock Avenue, Marietta, GA, 30064

I remained calm, sure that pep boys would take care of my and fix the problem. Jasper replaced the engine with another engine and pep boys took about 2 weeks to figure out this engine had bolt holes missing and some werent tapped. Basically the valve cover couldnt be attached due to this problem. Jasper then sent a third engine to be installed. At this point i had spent $622 on the first rental vehicle and $575 on the second because my vehicle was still in the shop. The engine installation was completed on 04/04/2016 and I payed $1476.77. Part of the rental vehicles and final payment are being reimbursed by Jasper motors, but still problems persist. The tech working on my vehicle when I went to go pick it up test drove the vehicle with me and the engine seemed to be idling low. I brought it up and the tech then got out of the vehicle and adjusted the timing in front of me without a timing light. He literally just increased the idle. Me knowing very little about the vehicle, did not know this was a problem. I drove off and even though the idle was relatively high, I thought the vehicle was fixed. That night when I got to base, the truck would start but not stay running. The engine seemed to be either taking too much air or fuel. I called pep boys very angry and they towed the truck to their shop and "fixed" the vehicle. I drove the truck 90 miles to a job interview and the engine was running very hot. I stopped the truck and checked the oil and coolant, and the truck had no oil in it. The valve cover and engine were covered in oil. I called pep boys yet again and angrily told them what was going on. They towed the vehicle to the pep boys in Athens to diagnose the problem for free. I called ahead and told them NOT to fix the vehicle. I waited two days for a call on the diagnosis, and recieved none. So i calle on the second day to figure out the issue, and they had already replaced the valve cover they had cracked on installation and had ordered an air intake to fix the one cracked on installation.  I told them NOT to fix the vehicle because I could not trust their work, but they did it anyways.

I have contacted customer support but of course everyone is dragging their feet and so far I have only been given the run around. I am still waiting on my truck to be fixed and it is 04/21/2016.

I now have no choice but to sit and wait for them to break my truck again. The negligence and lack of pride in their work is unbelievable. They have lied and cheated me the entire time. They cannot listen, follow instructions, fix anything, and do not care about customer satisfaction. Jasper is refunding part of my money but i was a full refund from pep boys. I cannot trust their work to last longer than a couple days. I have invested about $8000 so far and have nothing to show for it.

Its a restoration in progress. Im just frustrated that the first 8k down is on a single engine replacement. I was told the pep boys around here were a pretty decent group of mechanics, but obviously not. Its a very nice truck and is a classic. I am seeking attorneys advice and was hoping not to have to take it tp court but it is what it is. I just wanted to warn people from this company.

Why would you pay $8000 for repairs on a 1985 Jeep J10?

I don't understand what you were thinking by spending $8000 on a vehicle that is more than 30 years old.  You said originally that you were on your way to trade in this 30 year old vehicle when the head gasket blew.  You would have been $8000 ahead to just scrap the vehicle and get another one. Was it a restored classic car?  I am totally not understanding pouring good money after bad.

As to Pep Boys, they aren't known in our area for being 'good' mechanics at all. I wouldn't trust them with a bicycle much less any vehicle for repair. However you did have them work on your vehicle and if you want a refund, you may have to sue them for it. Speak to an attorney to see if you have a leg to stand on for a refund and to see if it is worth the extra time and money.
