I have been harassed off and on since 1996 by NELA and, in particular, by their agent Ken Shdo (formerly at 206-461-5461). My student loans went to a separate trial in the bankruptcy court in Seattle and several were discharged/forgiven specifically by the judge. Mr. Shdo contacted me at work and threatened to expose me to my employers if I did not immediately begin making payments on some of these discharged student loans.

I told him which ones had been discharged and which ones had not, so he told me he was actually collecting on the ones which had not been discharged, but refused to put it to me in writing. He kept calling and threatening to tell my employers and to garnish my wages if I did not start paying him $170/month and turning my income tax refunds over to him, and he kept refusing to put it in writing as to which loans I was paying.

I made these payments for several years and IRS also turned my refunds over to NELA. All of a sudden three of my payments were returned to me stating "loan unknown," so I tried to make the payments to Sallie Mae to no avail. They also returned my payments with similar remarks. Ken Shdo was no longer employed by NELA; I called many numbers but got no answers from anyone until GS Services (a collection agency hired by NELA to collect student loans) contacted me.

They have informed me that I paid over $7,100.00 in payments and IRS liens to them specifically toward the discharged/forgiven student loans. Mr. Shdo's deceit was finally discovered! He lied to me about which loans he was collecting in order to get me to pay on the invalid ones. In letters to both NELA and GC Services demanding the return of my money and to cease and desist, both have been returned by the Post Office as saying their addresses were no longer valid (addresses taken from their own correspondence to me).

Now GS Services has an agent who told me she will call me daily from Tucson, AZ to harass me to pay off these discharged/forgiven loans. I turn off my phone to avoid her harassment, but find I cannot receive other calls that I need to get. I have spoken to several of GC Services agents, and no one will believe me that these loans that they are collecting were written off. My bankruptcy attorney filed a "generic" Order of Discharge at the end of the trial on student loans, and GC Services said no judge would ever forgive any student loans, therefore I still owe them! Also, the IRS is still sending my rebates and refunds to NELA/GC Services.

Anything you can do to help me out of this situation would be much appreciated. My credit standing has been negatively affected by this.

I feel like an idiot. I just found this report today on the Internet. I did not believe this report would be aired, because I did not respond to Rip Off's final request for confirmation in order to file the report. I had decided to wait until I received my first (and only) copy of the bankruptcy court order before filing this report, but it went through anyway. Much to my dismay, I discovered several days later that NELA is correct about the particular loans it is collecting, and I am now taking care of that debt. I apologize to them for that error in my report. Nevertheless, I still do not feel Ken Shdo of NELA, nor several representatives from GC Services, operated in a professional manner to collect this debt. Once the court order was received, Renee of GC Services has been very helpful in getting me into a payment arrangement that fits my present budget.
