I applied for a credit card a couple months ago and selected Platinum because they gave $150 reward if you spend $500 in 3 months.  I have excellent credit and got another card that has my Limit at $26,000 when Capitol One only approved me for $1,000.  I called them and they said it was only until I established a payment record since I was new to their company.  I made a few small purchases on the card and then tried one that was somewhere near $100.  Declined, next one declined.  I called and they said they needed more info and said they needed photo ID, front and back of drivers license, 2 bills showing my payment record at my current address, pictures of my social security card front and back.

I did not give my ss# and told them by federal law a ss# can not be used for ID.  Instead, I gave them pictures of the card I was given to use with a new government ID number.  I tried again to use it and it was declined.  I do not remember what all information I put on the initial application but it was enough to be approved for the paltry $1000 and now they're declining.  Gives rise to suspicion as to why they are now demanding my ss#.  I believe the scam is to delay paying the $150 reward long enough that I can't spend their $500 in 3 months by this type of harassment.  I told her to cancel the card...I don't need it since I got another card with a $26,000 limit.

She proceeds to start telling me I Must make the minimum payment and I will continue to be billed even with a 0 balance on any more charges.  Hmmm.  I'm cancelled and they're keeping it open for more fraud charges???  I said I am cutting up this card as we speak and any charges beyond the first denial will not be paid.  Then she starts reading from what appears to be pages of  conditions and terms.  I told her I don't need to hear that, just send me the bill for the few original purchases around $100 and it would be paid in full.  She said she must read this so I told her go ahead and read, I'm done and hung up.  Actually when I told a friend I couldn't understand why Capital One would deny my purchases, he said Oh, no.  He knew different people that had many problems and would NEVER recommend this company to anyone and this proves him absolutely correct.

The other financial company I dealt with, I had been with for 40 years. I had a couple fraud charges come in on two cards with them, so I chose to try with a different company because I didn’t know if it was their internal problem or how I was getting those bills from companies that had no address or phone number. I called the most similar name online and they said they have had several calls about the same thing but it was not their company.

After the trouble with Capital One I did go back to my original and have had great service. If I gave Capital One all the required information for their original card, it was APPROVED and was using it, I question why now is it denied and they’re requesting my ss#. If they needed my ss# it would be on my initial application...not requested after the fact. If you had a credit card (maybe you don’t qualify for one) and you had been using it, then one day you get a call that wants your personal information including your SS# card printed front and back and mailed, would you question it…especially if you had previous unaccountable fraud.

I did give the last 4 digits and they could have read the entire number back to me but didn't. If you didn’t question it, you’re just plain stupid or a troll. How do you know they care less about $150? They didn’t pay you your commission?

When you applied you were required to provide your SSN. Contrary to your statement there is NO law that says a company can not ask for your SSN, in fact they are legally allowed to deny you services if you fail to provide it.

If you gave them a fake SSN when you applied, that would explain the low limit and account being locked until you can provide them additional verification. If you gave them your real information, then why do you all of the sudden refuse to verify your information?

The sad part here is you don't even see the real problem. You had one company give you a credit limit of $26,000 with no additional verification. What would keep a criminal from obtaiing the information you proivided to this same company and open a Credit Card up in your name that they then go on a $26,000 shopping spree. Leaving you to try and fix the ID Theft issue? Oh and don't say your information is so secure that no one will ever be able to commit ID theft against you...that is just putting your head in the sand. Especially when you are able to open up 26,000 credit lines with no additional verification.

Oh and they could care less about the $150. That isn't even a rounding error on a rounding error in their books.

It's good that you didn't give the name of the other company, because if you did you could be putting that out there for every criminal to use for easy pickings.
