Household sent a $5,000.28 check in the mail without verifying who they were sending the check to.

They used an old name of mine (changed 9 years ago when I remarried)

To an address I never lived at...

Ruined my credit when person who cashed check did not pay payments.

Before they reported a negative report to the credit agencies, we had had a conversation in which I informed them that I had never gotten or cashed the check, my name had changed and I had never lived at the address that the check was sent to!

Did you take them to Court? Did they cough up their definition on the term "liability"?

#2Consumer Suggestion

I know it has been a while, since you filed your update, but would like to know what they mean by "no liability". They are not above the law, and not allowed to report inaccurate credit information on anyone. According to "The Fair Credit Reporting Act", this Federal Law is placed to protect consumers in your situation, and is IMMUNE to STATE LAWS. This means in EVERY STATE of the Union ALL businesses are held accountable for inaccurate credit reporting, and damaging someones credit history. There are consequences. Corporations are NOT small governments above the law. In this day and age, they are possibly trying to form their own little countries and laws. I really hope you took them to Court, and got this resolved. If not, I would like to share some contact information. In your situation, it also sounds like you might be a victim to "Identity Theft", so it is important that you call this number: 1-877-701-9595. This is for the Federal Trade Commission, possibly for the Identity Theft Section. You qualify for a free Credit Report for the 2004, if your problem is still not resolved, or you have reason to believe you remain vulnerable. At the worst, you shouldn't have to pay more than $9. The Federal Trade Commission site is www.ftc.gov. You might also consider accessing [email protected], because this is where different levels of law enforcement work together. Unfortunately, there is no individual responce, but this still contributes to their case files for future Court processions. If no one ever reports these potential violations, they will never respond. Access http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/ for more information on determing the extent of your situation. Even if nothing more has happened, this could still come back to bite you. This has to be resolved. There is another Consumer Organization similar to The Rip-off Report only there specialty is: Identity Theft. Your personal documents were falsified. This will affect your ability to qualify for a VISA/Passport should you want to travel abroad. It might affect the future purchase of a new home. Not sure if it hasn't already. Even if your okay, it could affect your ability to qualify for better life insurance policies, lower interest credit cards, with no annual fees, and other things. The group is www.callforaction.org Here is their phone and address: Call For Action 5272 River Road, Suite 300 Bethesda, MD 20816 301-657-8260 Monday thru Friday Eastern Time This is a nonprofit organization. They might have some pointers, which are more specific than I can offer. I wish I could have found your Report sooner. Hope this helps.

They said: "We have no financial liability"... They have no financial liability???? They sent a negative credit report after this incident was put into their fraud department and they ruined my credit. I plan on taking them to court...I wonder how many other people have had this problem with Household?....
