In October 2011, our air conditioning died. Again. We knew it was only a matter of time before we needed to replace it. After having to hae an expensive part replaced three times in 2011 already, we decided it was time. We got estimates from three different companies on one day. All Tech Air was the third and final estimate we got that day.

The manager, Patrick, came out to our house within hours of our phone call to give us an estimate. While he was there he went up into our attic and looked at the unit outside. After he looked around, he went into his car for about fifteen minutes to put together a couple estimates for us. From my understanding, he consulted both his computer and he contacted someone in his office to put together a few different options for us.

The main option he pushed was for the Trane we ultimately purchased. He stressed the increased efficiency over not only our old unit, but also over the other options he presented us. He also told us that we would be receiving a $300 energy rebate on our tax return and a $350 energy credit on our electric bill. He pointed out that between those two things, the better unit was only slightly more expensive than the lesser unit. It seemed liked a no brainer to us, so we chose the better one.

The company came and installed everything before the week was out. For the $350 energy credit we were told they would take care of everything. They said it would take 2-3 months for the credit to appear on our account.

Well, three months goes by and there is no credit on our account. I call the air conditioning company and speak to someone, the office manager was my understanding, and she says she's going to call our energy company to find out what the hold up is. She calls me back and says they have the paperwork, and that our energy company takes slightly longer to process the credit than the other energy companies in the are. It is definitely on the way, though.

I wait a couple of months more and contact my energy company to find out what the delay is. They tell me two things: 1) I never filled out and energy audit which is required in order to get the rebate (I did not know that, and the air conditioning company never told me that), and 2) they never received any paperwork from the air conditioning company. I also learned that the air conditioning company has six months from the time of installation to submit the paperwork.

At that point we were one week away from it being six months. I quickly called the air conditioning company to find out what was going on. I was told that the woman I spoke with no longer worked there and part of the reason was because she was not submitting the paperwork for people. I was assured they would immediately file our paperwork and even push the install date back a month so we could get the energy credit. I informed the lady I spoke with about the energy audit being a requirement to get the credit so she could inform other customers to make sure to do it. She didn't know anything about it and was happy I told her.

A couple of months went by and we finally saw a credit on our energy bill. The problem was it was a $150 credit and not a $350 credit like we were told we qualified for. When I looked up the credits on the energy companies website, it showed that if we replaced a heat pump with a heat pump we got a $150 credit. If we replaced a heat strip with a heat pump we got $350.

Well, we replaced a heat strip with a heat pump, so we should have gotten the $350 credit. I call the energy company and they said the air conditioning company filed the paperwork stating we replaced a heat pump.

Next call was to the air conditioning company. The lady I spoke with had to call me back after speaking with the owner, Patrick (same guy who came and gave us the estimate and said we qualified for $350). She called back and said that Patrick was 98% sure we had a heat pump. I offered to email her a picture of the old unit, just in case that helped proved it was not a heat pump, and told her we were told by several other companies that we had a heat strip NOT a pump.

After emailing them the picture, I was told they could not tell whether it was a heat pump or not. They were still 98% sure it was a heat pump but could not prove it. We weren't sure how to prove it, other than we were certain it was not a heat pump. Eventually, we looked in our home owners inspection and found that the inspector noted we had "forced air heating" and not a heat pump.

I called back with the information I had found. The lady I spoke with said she would pass the information on to Patrick and then call me back. When she called me back, she told me that we were right and she had tried to amend our paperwork with the energy company. The energy company was very strict on their six month time limit, so nothing could be done.

Since then, they have tried to make deals with us to give us a year supply of air filters, which we don't have room for. They also offered to give us half off an annual inspection, however after finding out they didn't install the overflow pan properly which lead to water leaking in the attic and now water stains on our ceiling, the disorganization of all the paperwork, and receiving a couple of very rude and unprofessional emails from Patrick, we are not interested in having them be our go to air conditioning service anymore.

After telling me that I was harassing them (for sending them two emails) and being unreasonable for wanting the $200, it is very clear we aren't going to get that money from them.
