In 2006 I bought a Gateway M460ES Laptop from the Gateway business division. I also purchased a 4-year warranty. The terms of the warranty are 100% (not pro-rated) support for any defects and for any damage that occurs during the 4-year period. Repair is to be provided either in-home or by mailing the unit to a Gateway service center.

About 1.5 years ago, Gateway sold their business unit to MPC computers, which has subsequently gone out of business. Now I have a broken computer and no support. The warranty does not expire until March, 2010.

The computer has broken numerous times, including the following list of problems:

1. Keyboard Failure

2. Motherboard Failure

3. Hard Drive Failure

4. Blank Area on Screen

5. Broken Hinge

The most recent problem (broken hinge) occurred a week ago. I tried to contact MPC and found out that the company is out of business. I contacted Gateway and asked the customer support representative what Gateway intends to do to support my computer. He told me what you would expect; Gateway is no longer responsible for computers sold by their business unit and the company plans to do nothing to honor its warranties. I told him that the computer is a Gateway product, that the warranty says Gateway on it,and that Gateway sold it to me, not MPC. Of course all he did was reaffirm that Gateway is not going to honor its warranties. I told him that I was going to go on line and report Gateway, and that is exactly what I am doing.

So Gateway, thanks for weaseling out of your commitments. I am guessing that your executives never intended to honor the company's long-term warranties. They probably smelled a turkey from a long way off and sold the unit to MPC once it became obvious that the sales revenues were going to be permanently overwhelmed by warranty claims. I wouldn't be surprised if they cut some sort of backroom deal with MPC executives to sell off the business unit, scrap MPC, and walk away from the warranties. I really appreciate being sold a shoddy product with an expensive scam warranty. Thanks a lot.

Perhaps I will pull out the warranty and use it in the bathroom. At least then it will have some value. You jerks. Why don't you grow a pair and stand behind your product?

When you purchased the business class product from Gateway, you made that purchase through Gateway Business. Gateway Business was sold to the MPC Corporation. Your warranty and all entitlements were purchased by MPC as part of the purchase.

If you purchased a Lincoln towncar and Lincoln was sold to GM. GM then goes bankrupt from poor financial decisions. So now you take your car back to Ford (even though they do not own that company and are no longer responsible for that company) and expect them to fix the car because they originally owned Lincoln? I'm sorry, but it does not work like that.
