Approximately 2-3 months ago, my boyfriend purchased a Gateway computer. The computer never worked as promised by Gateway. When he contacted Gateway in an effort to return the computer for a refund of his money, Gateway told him they would not accept the return of the merchandise - that he was simply stuck with this faulty equipment. Fortunately, the purchase was made with his charge card and we stopped payment. At this point, Gateway decided that it would accept their defective product back.

My boyfriend was instructed to wait for "packaging materials" and to use them to return the computer. They arrived - in their own sweet time - the defective computer was packaged and returned to Gateway.

Over a month later, the credit card account still had not been credited for the returned merchandise. Upon calling Gateway to find out when his account would be credited, my boyfriend was informed basically that his account would be credited when Gateway felt like it. He was also informed that the credit would be minus the cost of shipping. Upon inquiring how much the shipping charges were, he was informed that it amounted to approximately $300.00!!!! In shock, he stated that the computer - which was small - could not possibly have cost that much to ship. At this point, he was informed that there were also Gateway's "handling charges".

Obviously, Gateway feels that we consumers must bargain in good faith, and fulfill our portion of the bargain and that Gateway should not be held accountable for anything Gateway contracts to do - not to supply a reliable product, not to attempt to satisfy consumer concerns, not to deal fairly with the consumer. And when Gateway screws up, the consumer should pay. GATEWAY - There is one thing that we as consumers can do - refuse to allow you to get your hands on our money! I suggest that this is necessary.
