My wife and I were married last June and, in her attempt to make our home traditional, Gretchen ordered several magazine subscriptions from US Readers Service in Tampa, Florida. After a couple of months we decided we were not satisfied with the magazines (too much advertising, not enough content), and she sent in their standard form cancelling the subscriptions, and incluced a check for the magazines received (as stated on the form). That was in October and the magazines just kept coming, even though she wrote "cancel" on every bill. I recently became involved, and when I called the company, they said I had no alternative but to pay the entire contract. This included 5 years worth of subscriptions for the several magazines, and totaled $595.70. They also told me that the contract was developed by a three step process: the original sales call, a "capping" call to ensure the magazines were wanted, and a call from a credit manager, to finalize the "investment" part of the contract. My wife remembers the first two calls, but not any call from a credit person. She further says that if she understood that there was a $600 committment, she would never have signed up. I have looked over all the paperwork (she keeps good files), and there is nothing to state that we are locked into this deal. They are also reporting us to a credit bureau. Can you help?
