I was standing in line at the post office this afternoon when I witnessed the most ridiculous thing. A young woman in front of me approached the counter and requested to purchase several stamps -- enough to mail a handful of letters she had with her. The black counter clerk was extremely rude to customer, despite the fact that she was friendly and polite toward the clerk. She flat out refused to sell her the stamps, saying "I don't got any stamps back here." Obviously she was just being lazy and didn't want to open the drawer that holds the stamps.

Other customers in line were purchasing stamps from the other counter clerk with no problem. Anyway, the rude black woman grunted, "You's got to buy the stamps from the machine around the corner." The customer left, then returned a few minutes later to report that the stamp machine was out of order. The counter clerk became even more agitated and rude, and continued to refuse to sell the stamps from behind the counter.

Whoever heard of a post office that won't sell stamps???!!! I believe this has to be a violation of some sort. Not to mention that I personally do not appreciate how this extremely rude, crass, lazy black woman treated this young lady, and probably treats other customers all day long. I for one will be filing a formal complaint AND taking my business elsewhere. I urge everyone else to do the same.

Since they have installed the stamp machines and the postal service center machines they no longer sell stamps at the counter. So yeah I have heard of them not selling them at the counter. It depends on your area. Even I have tried to get stamps and was told to use the machine. And also why does it have to be a race issue? That is not relavent to your complaint.

Ummm...why didn't you ask for her supervisor?

I mean, you were right there! Ask for the Station Manager! If the station manager isn't there, there is a supervisor around. If the odd chance there was no supervisor around, ask for the name and how to contact the manager of post office operations for that post office.

There's no excuse for you to a) tolerate that kind of behavior in the post office and b) for you to LET it happen by leaving very quietly and going to a computer to post it here. What good will it do here? How will that individual clerk be taken care of since you haven't identified her?

As for buying stamps elsewhere: I do. I hate waiting in line at the post office. I find that most all supermarkets and Walmart sell stamps, which I purchase alongside my other purchases. No markup either.

Oh, and by the way: this should get you all excited: postage rates are set to increase AGAIN on Monday the 14th.
