Seems that a component(with a manufacturing fault)called the optical block- has been discovered to have been installed into these large(40-60"), expensive sets.

Sony kept installing these components- and selling the TVs- even though Sony knew that most of them were defective and would, eventually, show up as a blue, or green or even a red line in the lower right hand corner of these sets. If the problem was not corrected, a multitude of that particular color dots would appear right in the middle of the set, making viewing an angry experience.
Following a customer outcry, Sony extended the warranty and those that were lucky to find out about this extension got their sets fixed.

The warranty extension-not made PUBLIC for cost reasons expired Dec 2008.
All other, loyal and uninformed, Sony customers were left holding the bag to the tune of $1400.00 for a tech. only repair.Yes, I am one of those left holding the BAG.
The new SONY gimmick is now to offer you a 52 inch LCD(KDL52V5100) TV set for approx. $1400 claiming that this price is a great savings from the reported-by Sony- price of $2300.

If you check the various electronic sites the highest price for this set is around $1400.
Plus, some HONEST sellers will tell you that after 3 months you will see a multicolored- horizontal- stripe right in the middle of the set and a service man will tell you that the part is on back order.
Another Class action suit is in order here. Enough is enough.
