I requested and submitted my credit card number for deposit for the rental of a Ryder truck. The rental was for a one way move beginning 19 Dec 2001 and ending 25 Dec 2001.

I was told by the local rep that the truck would be available for pick up anytime on 19 Dec 2001. Based on this information I hired movers to load the truck (all household goods had already been packed and ready for loading). When the movers arrived, I was out of the house on errands. They offered to pick up the truck for me. They called the Ryder rep for directions only to find that there was then no truck available, but that he would get me one as soon as possible (he told me one was expected to arrive that day and this all took place in Philadelphia, the fifth largest metro area in the U.S. surely, I thought, in this grand city a truck can be located).

Five hours after the movers arrived, I was able to drive up in a Ryder truck. Two and one-half hours later the truck was loaded and ready for departure. The local rep told me that I had a legit claim and that were I to call Ryder they would "take care of me," but would only assist me upon the completion of my move.

Due to my reliace upon Ryder's promise to provide me with a truck availabe during the morning of the 19th, I lost $500. Customer service, which eventually hung up on me, offered to reimburse my loss for $60.

The loss I sustained was due to Ryder's inability to timely fulfill the promise made. Their offer of $60 in satisfaction of losses sustained in inadequate.

Word to the wise: If you plan to move, after checking the consequences, it might be best to secure two trucks; each from different providers and cancel the reservation of the least desirable upon picking up a truck from the more desirable renter. Chances are the loss would only be $100 - this is much cheaper than the $500 I lost.
