Complaint Review: Jordan Marsh Dept. Store

Jordan Marsh Dept. Store Diamond Ring fraud

My elderly mother went and purchased a lovely diamond. She purchased it in the 1980s. She has never had a diamond and inherited a bit of money and purchased one. It was lovely to look at.

After she died last January we finally got around to bringing it to a jeweler for appraisal this week. Mother paid $1600 to
$1800 for this ring at Jordan Marsh Store located in Worcester
Massachusetts. ( now closed)

She had shopped at Jordans for years and loved the store. The ring was judged to be worth $300. max and was occluded and a poor diamond. Her favorite store ripped her off for a lot of money.

I hope this tells anyone looking for jewelry to never go to a place like Jordan Marsh for anything like a diamond. We cannot do anything now and I am happy that Mom never knew what criminals worked that store.

General Retailers are Poor Places to Shop for Diamonds

I am so sorry that your mother was the victim of outrageously high mark-ups that are all too common with regards to diamond (or any fine) jewelry in department stores.

Even your mall variety Zales or Gordons jewelers have very high markups.

Was the appraised value retail or wholesale??

Your best bet for buying precious stones, is too well arm yourself with information needed to make a smart buy. There are several very reputable diamond dealers on the internet. I recently bought diamond stud earrings (3/4 carat tw) for my wife this way. I compared similar quality at a "mall" retail jeweler and it cost 2X as much. When I compared to places like Sears, I didn't EVEN see anything that was comparable.

If your mother was happy with the diamond, and there were no visible occlusions or obvious coloring, so what? It made her happy.
