1998 - 2003 Honda Odysseys and Acuras have transmissions in them that the manufacturer knows is defective. They do not have sufficient cooling and are notorious failures on every vehicle at around 125,000 miles. Honda will not warranty or discount repairs or provide any assistance to owners of these vehicles.
Used car dealers selling these vehicles as trade-ins sometimes don't know that the transmission is defective because it is somewhat insidious and doesn't show up until driven for some time.
A 2000 Odyssey with something around 125,000 miles on it usually sells for around $3500 in good condition. A rebuilt transmission for this car with a proper cooler also costs about $3500 so if you have to repair it you now have a $7000 car and you could have bought a MUCH better vehicle for that price.
Rebuilt transmissions from several shops around the country come with an external cooler and they warranty them for 36 months and unlimited miles; proof that the cooler is indeed the original problem.
Never buy a Honda Odyssey or Acura with around 125,000 miles on it unless the transmission has already been replaced AND unless it has an external cooler. Honda will not help you nor will the used car dealer where you bought it.
